It's (RB/FB hybrids) becoming a strong trend in this league with the success we've seen in players such as Jacob Hester, Mike Tolbert, Brian Leonard, John Kuhn, LeRon McClain, Peyton Hillis (he started as a fullback), Ernest Graham, (even Michael Robinson to an extent) and many others.

I think a rotation of Byham and a guy like Havili would work tremendously.

They only put him at FB cause he's white. Dude's not a FB.

Nor is Mike Tolbert, really. Nor was Mike Anderson.

IMO I'd rather have a good fullback than another "weapon" who is only a mediocre fullback (with gore, crabs, and davis we have enough weapons).
Hillis, Brian leonard, Tolbert, Snelling..

Exactly. We all know what we are looking for in the WCO and its not converted TE's playing FB. In a true WCO the FB is one of the most important positions. You have to look at Rathman. He was always a viable running threat.

There has been some discussion about acquring a fullback for Jim Harbaugh's WCO. Our best choice may already be on the team. What about converting Nate Byham to fullback? He's 270 pounds, a great blocker, has decent hands and speed as a tight end, and played out of the backfield some last year as an H-back. Since our WCO fullback needs to be able to catch passes out of the backfield as well as block, I think he might be a good fit.

As other options, I really like Stanley Havili from USC as a versatile fullback, or maybe the kid from Stanford.

49ers wants Nate to come in at 260 next yr..

At 270lbs, I would not be surprised if Harbaugh tries to convert Byham to a Tackle position or Guard. That's unlikely because of his receving skills, but FB/TE would be perfect.

I like Byham but he's a little slow but he did play FB a bunch earlier in the year. Then he disappeared for half the year. Not sure if Johnson just wanted to go back to Norris or what or if he was hurt.

rookie free agent FTW
Leave him at his natural position. There are plenty of young guys in the draft that would be great at fullback.

Won't work, tried it in Madden and he had fumbling issues.

probably means it will work since everything in madden that does work isnt realistic....therfore everything that doesnt work in madden must work in NFL
I'm with the guys that have suggested D Walker. I like Byham, but he's too tall (6'4")to get under the pads of linebackers. Low man wins in blocking. D Walker is almost the same dimensions as M Norris (6'1" 246lbs) plus he runs a sub 4.5 40 which would be great for toss plays. Norris & Byham both are too slow to block for toss plays.

Now granted, Walker don't give crushing blocks, but neither does the kid from Stanford that other people have suggested we get. The kid from Stanford is great at angle blocks which Walker would be good at.

You could be in base personnel (2wr, 1te, 1fb, 1HB) an motion walker out of the backfield and now basically have mismatches all over the place. or go with 1wr, 2te (Byham be the 2nd te) 1fb, 1hb an motion Walker out of the backfield and still pass or run out of that personnel grouping.
