I was watching Chronicle Live and they were talking about the niner switching to a 4-3 having TKO in the middle and moving Willis to the Weakside. Good idea??? We have the personnel to do it. Move Justin Smith back to his original DE position, Soap and Franklin in the middle, and McDonald at the other DE position. Lawson at the other OLB, and you can have Harlson and Brooks rotate in at the DE positions. It was Harlson's original position in college and i've seen Brooks in a 3-point stance before when he's come n on passing downs. Thoughts?

I think moving the best ILB in the league to a different position is a bad idea.
Plus, Spikes is too slow to play 4-3 MLB.

And Gary Plummer was faster? He was our middle linebacker in the 90's. If you look back when we were a 4-3 defense, non of our middle linebacker were really fast... Think about Willis blitzing off the edge!!!

IMO it's a bad idea to put a guy with sideline to sideline speed like Willis has got on one side of the defense. In the middle he can dominate all over the place.
However we will be running a 3-4 next year so the point is moot.

At the end of his career? probably not but Plummer is his Niner years couldn't play MLB in the NFL today either.
How about Willis blitzing up the middle? It's worked pretty well when we've used it.

IF... IF they switch to a 4-3 (they wouldn't) Spikes is the odd man out. Bowman on the weak side, Willis in the middle, and Lawson/unkown on the strong side.

Why don't people realize that we do not have the personnel for a 4-3 defense? Meaning our depth at linebacker is much stronger than what we have at d-line.

first of all I prefer the 3-4, but we have as just as much personnel for the 4-3. We have no stand out OLB's, our keys players to run the 3-4 Frankllin, Lawson, Spikes, MacDonald are all free agents and Brooks played well at OLB in the 4-3 his rookie year. If the 9ers were going to make the switch this would be the year. I hope not though.
