Heitmann would be an improvement over Rachal every day of the week. I've said it a few times. Our best look for the OLine looks like this

Staley-Iupati-Baas-Heitmann-Davis

Not sure on what you mean by groom a rookie. Heitmann has only been in the league for 7 years.

I said Heitmann at RG "and also" draft a rookie to groom. If we can use the guys we have that's always better.

What do you think about swapping Davis and Staley? LT is Davis' natural position and it's not like Staley has been dominant. It might help both of them. Plus imagine running to the left with Iupati and Davis - WOW

did you not see Davis get beat during the season? No way you want him protecting the blind side of your QB. Keep him at RT.

I think Baas has found his calling. Baas was not very good at guard, but he has shown promise as a center this season. I love Heitmann, but he is getting up there in age and has injury concerns. If we don't draft a guard to replace Chilo, I know Heitmann can do the job. He played guard early in his career before replacing Jeremy Newberry.

found his calling? Baas was the best C coming out of college. Only the 49ers decided to try him at G.

I actually thought he would eventually move to center after a couple years at Guard. Kind of like what happened with Newberry, but curiously, it never happened. Maybe because Heitmann snagged the job? Regardless, Baas has shown he can be an NFL center.

I saw all of our linemen getting beat, except for Iupati. My point is that maybe him playing his natural position (and being next to a stud Iupati) might help his game.

Yeah I think Heitmann at RG would do wonders for Davis. It seemed like most of Davis' protection breakdowns were on stunts with the DT and DE, and Rachal did NOTHING to help Davis out. Heitmann has always been good at reading the defense and calling out protections, so he could help Davis. He just doesn't get much push and that worries me. A good pocket starts in the middle and we're a good RG away from having that.

Chilo
heitman>baas
Baas... all this time he has been a solid C but couldnt break in as a guard.. and wasnt he a C in college.. perfect of how Nolan misuses his players.. 3rd and long and you run, you got VD :)

Nolan put a natural G at C and a natural C at G. no wonder you couldn't win a damn game you clown.
Getting drafted that high, you should be able to play both C and G. He did both in college @ Michigan.
Heitmans injury is likely to end his career

Neither.

IMHO, Heitman is past his prime and injury prone and to some extent Baas is also. I'd like to see both replaced with a rock-solid OC. I think it's the reason why there have been so many protection breakdowns in the center of the OL. When your OGs are getting beat and runners are coming free means someone isn't making the right calls.

Both could be upgraded.

Good comment about the line calls. This has concerned me all year and I had wondered if it was affecting the rookies. Heitmann seems to have a knack for making the calls.
