I noticed this season that we play absolutely terrible against any team with a winning record, so I wanted to see how we've played against them since 2006. I chose 2006 since that was the first year we actually improved since rebuilding, and should've been the start of the team slowly getting better.

I wanted to look at it two ways: how the 49ers played against teams who had a winning record at the time we played them, and how they played against teams who finished with a winning record.

Here's how we stacked up against teams who had a winning record when we played them. If we beat a team, I showed the team we beat, their record at the time, and the record they finished with.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Facing teams with a winning record
2010: 0-6
2009: 3-5 (1-0 SEA (5-11), 6-4 JAX (7-9), 8-4 ARI (10-6 playoffs))
2008: 3-5 (6-5 BUF (7-9), 8-4 NYJ (9-7), 8-7 WAS (8-8))
2007: 1-4 (9-5 TB (9-7 playoffs))
2006: 5-3 (1-0 STL (8-8), 4-3 MIN (6-10), 6-3 SEA (9-7 playoffs), 8-5 SEA (9-7 playoffs), 9-6 DEN (9-7))
Total: 12-23

Facing teams at least 2 games above .500
2010: 0-3
2009: 2-3 (6-4 JAX (7-9), 8-4 ARI (10-6))
2008: 1-4 (8-4 NYJ (9-7))
2007: 1-3 (9-5 TB (9-7 playoffs))
2006: 3-3 (6-3 SEA (9-7 playoffs), 8-5 SEA (9-7 playoffs) 9-6 DEN (9-7))
Total: 7-16
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bad records, and a lot of those teams that had a winning record at the time ended up with a losing record.

So here's how we stacked up against teams who finished with a winning record:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Record against teams finishing with a winning record
2010: 0-7
2009: 2-6 (10-6 ARI (playoffs))
2008: 1-7 (9-7 NYJ)
2007: 1-5 (9-7 TB (playoffs))
2006: 3-5 (9-7 SEA (playoffs), 9-7 DEN)
Total: 7-30

Record against teams finishing at least 10-6
2010: 0-6
2009: 2-4 (10-6 ARI (playoffs))
2008: 0-4
2007: 0-5
2006: 0-4
Total: 2-23
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And I think that very last stat is very telling. Since 2006, we are 2-23 against teams that finished 10-6 or better, with both of those wins coming against the 10-6 Cardinals last year.

I fear we are worse than we thought.

Good data. In the beginning, we didn't match up well with those teams. What has doomed us the last 3 seasons is poor game-planning or even clock management. Remember the Arizona game in 2008? We have the talent to be in the 8-8 to 10-6 range consistently. But talent alone will not win you games in the NFL.
Nice Breakdown. As bad as coaching has been, this team needs a major infusion of talent at very key areas. Mainly @ QB, CB and safety. Hard to beat good teams with below average play in those areas. Add in a lack of pass rush, and you get lackluster performances against good teams. But hey at least they are good against the run. The last 2 years 9 out of the 14 wins have come against the amazingly poor NFC West.
we have lost alot of close games against good team though.

We really need to improve how we play on the road
Well that is good info and though I havent put in the research I did feel that we never seem to beat good teams. To see the stats of it layed out is, however depressing.
This is better information (although SAD) than any of the information the so call "experts" put out on TV or the internet.

All you have to do is look at the Pats & Steelers. Arguably the best 2 teams for the last while. What do they have that we don't? Great, consistent coaching, year in and year out. With great coaching, the sky is the limit for us, even with our current roster...
this breakdown almost made me throw up in my mouth
Good info. It proves that the 9ers were as bad as there record.
This is the type of posting that makes 49erswebzone worthwhile. Nice job, statman.

This biggest danger in the current FO and coaching makeover, is Jed 's belief that all this club needs is the right HC and the right QB, and they are instantly a 10-11 win playoff team. The truth is found in statman's figures. This club is A LONG WAY from being a legitimate playoff contender.

The ownership is on its way to another train wreck by Jed believing that this club is loaded with talent, and he justs has to "trust his gut" to remedy matters.

Back up the truck for the Front Office and bring in a strong, experienced, successful GM, from outside the organization. Someone like Floyd Resse (111 NFL wins as a GM, 3 Rookies of the Year as a GM, hiring of HC Jeff Fisher as a GM).

I new it was bad, the only teams I can remember beating as an underdog where Seattle and Arizona.
I knew it was going to be ugly, but I clicked on this thread anyway.
This is all good info. I am not pursuaded by the popular rant that our team's biggest problem these last few years has been the QBs. No doubt, they could have used better coaching and OC, but the rest of the team is every bit as responsible for our poor record.

No doubt, it would be nice to have a great franchise QB. But they are hard to come by. Even if we had one, it does not guarantee success. Look at SD. Rivers is a really good QB and finished this season as the 2nd rated QB at 104. Yet, the team did not make the playoffs. Their offensive and defensive stats look good, but something was terribly amiss.

In contrast, the NYJ are a good team and are in the playoffs, but their QB Sanchez ended the season with a rating of 75, much worse than Alex. Obviously, it is a team that is strong enough in all other areas to survive Sanchez' shortcomings.
Props for crunching some numbers and adding something original to NT, far and few between these days.
