So I don't understand this part of the article and why I disagree with many of the "it's all the York's fault" crowd:

That’s where things started to go badly wrong, when Jed’s dad John sided with Donahue over Steve Mariucci and the whole organization headed directly south, trashing its grand legacy in the process.

Oh COURSE John York would side with Donahue. He's the freaking GM chosen by Walsh. Do you ever find it funny with all the criticism of Donahue and York, Walsh's name is conveniently edited out of the historical recollection? You know why? Because any writer who calls Walsh decision to choose Donahue as "wrong" would lose credibility. It's cowardice in my opinion and places waaaaay too much blame on the decision-making here as being one person's fault; scapegoating in its purist sense.

Completely wrong. Nice revisionist historian here.

John York came in and told Donahue in no uncertain terms we were going to cut high priced players and coaches and get well under the salary cap. He even charged players at the facility for stamps...

Donahue and Erickson to a extent were the "fall guys." The "scapegoats." Donahue is a pretty smart guy. He was forced into doing cuts he didn't want to do in order to get under the cap. Eventually he gave up on the Yorks ways and spent some of his time in Southern Cal handling his businesses and such. He knew he was put into a position to lose.

Who chose Donahue dude? Seriously. Are you saying that Walsh didn't chose Donahue? I just want to clear up all you BS right here.... on this fact. Who brought Donahue TO YORK as the right choice for GM.

Please tell me because I'd love to know.

~ Walsh advised to pick him.
~ Donahue is a much smarter personnel guy than given credit for on this WZ.
~ Donahue was forced into a massive spree of cuts by the Yorks to get under the cap.
~ Donahue was then made a convenient "fall guy" / "scapegoat" for the Yorks.

Seriously did you even read my post?...

Wednesday marked the dawning of a new era for the 49er regime; it is a beginning that is interestingly enough linked directly to Walsh, who chose Donahue as his eventual successor.
And everyone in the organization on down fully understood that. For the past two years, Walsh and John McVay. 49er’s director of football operations, have nurtured and mentored Donahue, the ever perfect pupil, being both respectful and attentive at the same time.

“I wouldn’t be here today if Bill Walsh didn’t call me two years ago and invite me,” said Donahue. “When Bill called I had a chance to come up and learn professional football. I knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

What was so ironic was the fact that for many years Walsh had considered luring Donahue out of UCLA to take over the 49er’s in the late 1980’s. He was seeking an energetic and bright coach who could come in and take over the franchise; Donahue was one of those in his thoughts.

In that decade Walsh was unable to lure Donahue into the 49er fold, but now a full decade later Walsh has finally landed his man. “I made it,” Donahue said. “It took us a long time coach.”

Come again. Thanks for playing.

So now Donahue is the "good guy" in all of this. Even your girl Ann Killion disagrees with this.

She says York's biggest mistake was siding with DONAHUE over Mariucci. I'm sorry dude but you're losing credibility with every successive post.

1) Ann Killion is not my girl. My opionions are independent from her. If I agree or disagree with her on one independent point I say so.

2) She is wrong about Donahue and you are too. He was a "scapegoat." His plan (Donahue) was to try to win. Yorks plan (John at the time) was to get under the salary cap. He was told (forced to at the threat of his job) to make massive cuts quickly to get under the cap. He was made to be a fall guy to bring costs more into line with the Yorks desires.

Donahue eventually all but gave up on the losing hand he was forced into. At the end he was spending more and more time in Southern Cal managing his businesses. He knew he was set up to fail and he was set up to be the scapegoat. It's exactly the position the Yorks put him in.

3) Yorks biggest mistake was being a York.

Now Ann is wrong? Okay well that's different from your first post.

I have not found one iota, one article that states York made Donahue the fall guy. In fact Donahue flew back to SoCal every week and didn't even stay close to the team from his days as a consultant. The Yorks had control of the team when Walsh was still the GM. I can't believe your hate is so blind you're now DEFENDING Terry Donahue.

This is why the senseless "this is all the York's fault" has zero credibility, and more importantly, not entirely based in fact.

~ It's not different from my post in any way. I said I believe we need an outside person. Not in insider York YES MAN. On that point and that alone I agree with her. Not everything she says and not everything she ever has said and ever will say...

~ What part of being forced into doing something don't you understand? Donahue didn't want to let all the good players go and get tens of millions under the cap. That was York. He was even charging guys for stamps...

Yup sir it's the Yorks.

I understand it's fiction until you prove it. SanDiego just because you say it doesn't mean it's true.

Did the Yorks hold a public press conference and say "we need to cut costs?" Gee...no they didn't. Would you expect them to?

Quality coaches and GM's mostly steer clear of them because they know what they are about.

What Walsh and Donahue talked about is not what the Yorks implemented.

Talk is cheap dude. You're still not quoting. I realize these things may have happened in your mind, but no one wrote about it.

Nobody wrote about it? Are you serious?

Tight-fisted 49ers last in league in spending / York has S.F. $19 million under the league average, a big contrast to the days of Eddie DeBartolo

December 26, 2004|By Ira Miller

The 49ers are at the bottom of the NFL not only in won-lost record but in spending money.

League salary figures for the 2004 season obtained by The Chronicle show that San Francisco spent less than any other team on players -- a total of $63.6 million to cover salaries and bonuses. That's $19 million under the league average and $3 million less than the next-lowest team payroll.

A year ago, the 49ers' payroll was next-to-lowest in the NFL.

The 49ers' ranking has been significantly lower over the last five years than it was previously. That's no coincidence. Five years ago, Eddie DeBartolo's departure as the owner became official and his sister, Denise DeBartolo York, and her husband, John York, took over the team.

Since the 2000 season, the team's first under York ownership, the 49ers have paid on average $67.8 million annually in player salaries and bonuses, or about $6.3 million a year below the NFL average.

During the previous six years, after the salary cap went into effect in 1994 but with Eddie DeBartolo in charge, the 49ers spent an average of $53.4 million a year in salaries and bonuses, or about $3.7 million above the league average.

The payroll figures should not be confused with the salary cap. The payroll figures are based on cash actually paid by teams each year, as opposed to the salary cap, which -- despite the 49ers' repeated reference to its limits -- provides considerable maneuvering room.

This year, the salary cap was $80.582 million per team.

The Washington Redskins spent more than $116 million, the highest player payroll in league history. Philadelphia, at just more than $100 million, is second in payroll. Over the last five years, the Redskins' average of $85 million is well above the second-highest New York Jets ($79 million), and more than $14 million a year above the cap figure.

As the 49ers are fond of reminding us, the salary cap can be annoying. But it also is flexible, with signing bonuses paid up front but prorated over the length of a contract for cap purposes, so teams routinely spend more than the cap figure.

Fans often do not recognize the difference between actual cash and the cap. Cash is what the teams spend, and the figures in the accompanying charts, exclusive to The Chronicle, all are actual dollars spent. (See accompanying article on the cap and "dead money.")

Bulls**t. I call bulls**t.

There's nothing here about Terry Donahue being the fall guy. Nice try but that's NOT going to work.

This is what we're arguing about:

What part of being forced into doing something don't you understand? [/b]Donahue didn't want to let all the good players go and get tens of millions under the cap. That was York. He was even charging guys for stamps...

I know the Yorks are cheap but this is about Terry Donahue NOT being a fall guy.

MTC is that Killion is mostly(I said mostly) accurate in her article. The one thing I totally agree with is we need to go out of the organization for the new GM. This Balke For GM s**t is just more of the same old York smoke and mirrors. We need a proven personnel man. No more on the job training! I've been going to 49er games since 1965 and If this scenario comes to pass I am through paying $ for seats to these sorry ass owners. I retire to my 50 yard line chair at home. Yes sir.
Giving Balke the job will only prove nothing has changed in SanFrancisco - just Jed going for the Status Quo pick.
Jed will hire a GM, then he and the GM will go and find a HC.

Quote:
York was asked whether a new general manager would help in a potential coaching search.

"We'll have a general manager, and as we go forward, that will be something that the general manager and I discuss together," York said after the game.

Should we trust Jed or should he let the GM bring in a guy, on his own?

She's totally right. If jed hires him..it would show that jed has learned nothing. I dont want a "yes" man. Baalke becomes gm...then goes for harbaugh...way to much inexperience..NO way

We have a green owner in Jed

If he hires Baalke and is only polishing his interviewing skills flying in 'potential candidates' with hell knows whos money. Then we have a green GM.

The green GM will hire a green coach because as mentioned, no seasoned HC with a SB under his belt will listen to a green guy like Baalke.

We the faithful fans get to sit and watch 3 to 5 years of rebuilding.

Are we not entertained?
Donahue was miscast as GM, he would've been a solid coach. His teams at UCLA played fast and were competitive with less talent than the top college powers. York must get someone to run the organization, maybe Baalke is an up and coming talent. A better message would be someone not in the organization that is unbiased with a fresh perspective. Let's face it the Yorks have a terrible track record in running an NFL franchise. They are consistent in putting a bad product on the field year after year. Can they change after so many years?

Nice one, Maximus! I hope this is all a smoke screen. The status quo sucks and Jed appears to be heading down the easy path instead of taking his time and getting it right. Here we go again..................................

Baalke could very well be a solid play.

This guy might be working for Jed for quite some time now but he never was a 49ers guy or somebody whose name has been floating around for years. Some GMs with other teams were unknown before they got their job and their team started winning.

Trent started from the bottom of the profession and obviously he's got talent and good management/leadership skills to reach this far, albeit the 49ers. After I've seen him talk a few times during the draft and that he puts out very good presentations tells me he is a very good professional and knows what he's talking about.

Also, when he was on KNBR (or another radio station - can't remember when) he appeared to be a personable and likeable guy. I have seen GMs that are just total AsHls and can't even do a decent job. If I am working for a big company and doing my best, with all the talent that I have, dedication, and loyalty to elevate myself to the next position and just get bypassed by an outsider - I would be so raging MAD.
