if niners lose to SD, win vs StL/AZ, and StL wins one of 3( the one win coming against either KC/SEA), and if SEA wins one of 3(doesnt matter who the one win comes against) = SF nfc west champs

i know there are more, but i'm not sure about how the tie breakers would factor in... if two teams finish tied, have the same division record and have split the season series, i dont know if the next tiebreaker is conference record or if it goes to strength of schedule and if strength of schedule is based on the combined 2010 record of this years opponents or if strength of schedule is based upon this years opponents' record in 2009....

can anyone shed some light on this for me?

We beat the Chargers, and the Rams and Seahawks lose. We then control our own destiny. Having both the Seahawks and Rams having two loses in the division.

I would call KC @ STL a toss up, not a likely loss for the Rams.
I cant figure out the possibility of us winning the division by:

winning at SD and losing at St. Louis...

we could be 7 - 9; St. Louis has to lose this week AND to Seattle, but Seattle would have to lose its other two. (Thinking as I type.)

So yes wow many scenarios. This team has to just not get like the hen in the henhouse.

We could shoot up to the top on the 'playoff scenario board' that the networks broadcast. What I love is that theyre not even putting us in the picture when they show who is 'in the hunt'!

Under the radar baby, then we're going tooooo... pounce, just like that kitty in the parking lot

They showed the niners in the hunt on every NFC playoff picture I saw.

I thought that somebody visits a thread because they're interested in the topic.

It sounds like this thread doesn't interest you. You didn't have to visit if that's all you have to say. Some people like to explore possibilities of what the future holds.

HAHA. Okay, I'll see myself out of this thread

The way I see it we have to win out. If we lose Thurs we'll be screwed. They won't let a 7-9 team in. Besides..I'd rather not make the playoffs at 7-9. That'll make a failed season look like a success.

I think the Chargers are going to crush us.

I think the Rams beat the Chiefs and win the division.

That said, you never know what's going to happen.

That's why they play the games.

However, I am in strategic denial. I'm going to expect the worst and... that's all.

After all the close losses we had this season, I don't know if I could handle having my hopes shattered in the playoff hunt... again.

Just like last year... Favre magic pass and 3 point loss at Seattle kept us out of the playoffs.

No hope. Can't do it.

If you believe in NFL conspiracies then we NEED to beat San Diego.

With all the complaints about a 7-9 team potentially winning the NFC there is potential the NFL might intervene to make sure 8+ wins take the NFC West.

If the 49ers don't beat San Diego (with or without help from the refs) the only realistic hope for an NFC West team to avoid 7-9 will be the RAMS.

It would not surprise me if the RAMS got a little help from favorable calls in the games against KC and SF.

The Seahawks won't get calls b/c they still have the darling SB champ Saints on their schedule and the Saints are in a dog fight for a playoff spot.

On the otherhand...if we beat San Diego I wouldn't be surprised if we get some favorable calls against the RAMS to help us secure an acceptable 8-8 record and division title.

IF the Rams find a way to beat KC at home (where the play lights out), they will be playing us with Champagne on ice @ home and I think that may be enough to inspire them to victory with 8 wins, then it doesn't matter if they win @ SEA or not and they would be at 8 wins.

there are a number of things that can happen due to the complexity of the tiebreakers

Two Clubs
Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Strength of victory.
Strength of schedule.
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best net points in common games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.

Three or More Clubs
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format).
Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs).

Hmmmmm now that I think about it, we didn't get raped by the refs against Seattle like we usually do every week.
