In the immortal words of Jerry Glanville, this is the NFL which stands for Not For Long. And it didn't take very long to realize that there is no substance behind his bombastic bravado. Whether by how he interacts on the field during a game, or his comments before or afterwards, or his bottom line results. None, nada. To think, I actually miss seeing Mike Nolan talking on his headset or coaching up the D and trying to make in game adjustments.

Most of us bitter little children had very realistic expectations that he would have learned from his mistakes from his first full year of HC duty - that he needed to expand his limited philosophy on offense. And the warning signs have been there - his background as a player and limited coaching experience, his own stated philosophy, his firing of Martz and hiring of Jimmy Raye. Instead, he retrenched it even further that no amount of in season firings (Raye) or benchings of limited QBs could fix.

for anyone to step out and say race is still a major issue is funny to me. sports were the first area in which races were all treated equally. when black players came into baseball, football, basketball, etc and they helped teams win, even back in the day when racism was very common, people put aside their hate because of a common goal. their team was winning, and all the sudden race didnt really matter.

i hate when people single out sports, and question "why is there only 1 black OL coach in the NFL?" maybe because hes the only black guy whos an NFL caliber OL coach? if that dude can tell me which of the 31 other white OL coaches dont deserve their jobs, and which black OL coaches would be better, then fine. otherwise hes just pulling the race card for no reason.

Sports in general today is one of the most accepting cultures in America. Owners have all realized, even if they are racist, that winning matters most. if the black guy is the best for the job, he gets the job. race affecting who gets what job probably comes into play every now and then. maybe its a close comparison, and a team picks the white guy. it probably happens every so often, but what about the black guys in charge of things who pick the black player/coach because they want to even things out? you cant tell me black coaches, GM's dont pick black players over white ones, and use the excuse that theyre giving black guys a chance.

the player/personnel guy in Jacksonville was black, and he had all black QB's on the roster the whole time he was with the team. its the same thing as what is complained about the other way around.

in 2010, when nearly half this country would support gay marriage, anybody who comes out and starts saying race is the reason why they did or didnt get a job in pro sports just wants attention. if youre good enough in sports, you get the job. black, white, green, etc.

Yep, you're right, race never has anything to do with anything ever, ever, ever, ever.

Your laughably fictive history of sports as the great equalizer be damned, race is never a factor.

here's from another thread on the front page right now:

In the strictest sense of the word, he IS treated differently because he's black.

Because the NFL has the Rooney Rule. Other than that, it's bogus.

You can't have a both ways and cry "race" when you're already being treated special because of a rule.

Boo hoo, woop dee doo.

he said it had to do more with him being an HOF ex-PLayer and his players not having the same passion that he does.

Agree. I didn't hear him say Singletary is judged differently because he is black. I heard what you heard.
The more important mistake made in this interview is that Singletary can't understand players who are not passionate. While that may be part of his problem with players, it is not an issue with the team being bad. He can't understand that all positions can not/should not have line backer mentalities. QBs have to remain calm and somewhat implacable. Montana pointing out people in the stands during a pivotal point in a super bowl is an example of someone who can calm the whole offense by redirecting and then directing again. Singletary would have no doubt told Montana he wasn't passionate enough if he is looking in the stands. H doesn't get this subtle aspect of the game.

As for race, it is an issue and will remain one for some time to come. But, it is not the issue here with many people. No doubt some fans are racists but Singletary is not winning or looking like he's learning how to become a winner...period! Race or not.

This is crazy, when you have a team that is supposed to win and you don't win, I don't think race is a factor anymore. This is about success & failure!

He is judged differently. That doesn't change the fact that he is a terrible coach and should be fired.
