The results of the latest WZ poll about recent 49er head coaches is baffling.
Regarding the worst 49er HC in recent history, I think it's a toss-up between Nolan and Sing. People forget that Erickson's first team missed the playoffs only b/c Donahue didn't give him a kicker (I think they went through four that year, most or all of whom missed makable game winners). Erickson's first team beat the world champion Bucs on the road, and beat the Rams when they were still the greatest show on turf. His first team also had a winning record, and gave us some blowout wins, something we have seen only every few years (at best) from Nolan and Sing. He even won big games with Rattay at QB.
Erickson's second year was a different story, obviously, as the team went 2-16. But again, something is forgotten: Donahue jettisoned Garcia, Owens, Hearst, Deese and others before that second season. While the 49ers were indeed an aging squad, such a move was intended to save money, and never gave the team a chance to be competitive (just like this year's Cardinals).
I don't mean to suggest that Erickson was a great NFL coach, because he never was. His considerable successes were all at the college level. He did, however, bring some basic football competency - much more so than the jokers we've been watching since 2005.
BTW, Harbaugh gets my vote for next year.

I was happy when Erickson was hired. I also think he should have been given more time. Good post!

great points about erickson, he really was hamstrung in his second year
harbough sounds like a good idea, but i think we need someone proven in the nfl, generally speaking college coaches dont translate well in the league and right now were suffering from a head coach that had no coordinator experience at this level..
obviously gruden is an attractive option, but unlikely
has anybody thought about brian billick? the guy won a super bowl with trent dilfer, obviously our defense isnt as strong as that baltimore team, but i think with billick our offense could be a little better, we have more talented skill positions (obviously qb is still a gaping chasm), gotta start somewhere

I wasn't. I thought it was a terrible decision and still do. The one I miscalled was TDon. I thought he would carry on the legacy of Bill Walsh. But between them they destroyed the franchise.

To me Sing is the worse. Erickson, like the previous poster said, brought something to the table in terms of X's and O's. The second year of Erickson's tenure that team was blown up and i don't know how anyone could have won with that team. Nolan knew his stuff on the D side and was left to rebuild. But sing is all about watching the film but doesn't know what to do in terms of X's and O's. So sing get my vote as worse of the 3.
