Jed needs a GM and not Baalke. Sorry but I disagree with Ceaddar - a GM is more than someone who makes great "draft day" decisions. McVay was an excellent GM not just because he helped Walsh in the draft, but he helped Walsh with EVERYTHING except game planning - contracts, using the Plan B free-agency, helping to craft the scouting department, identifying great prospects. McVay had relationships all over the league and could wheel and deal and leveraged those relationships.

Walsh was an anomaly because he not only had an eye for players, but he also had an eye for coaches. That's so rare, it's crazy (all of Belicheck's disciples have failed as HCs). Also you have to give credit to Policy and Clark for running a pretty good ship when Walsh/McVay retired the first time.

The 49ers need a GM, they don't need a coach (yet). They need someone to rudder the organization, not just a Scout-In-Chief (ala Scott McCloughan).

Yep, I've been saying this for awhile, too.

That's why I started that huge ramble/rant of a thread on getting a GM now.

We need someone there to help Jed start the process of this rebuild as soon as possible. We're only four weeks out from the end of the season now, so it can wait... I guess. ::sigh::

I'm so nervous about the whole CBA issue causing all sorts of problems that only an experienced football guy with major connections will be aware of and able to prepare for.

I have zero faith in a "normal" season next year, if there is a season at all. We need to be ready....

Which is why I think this gives the 49ers ample time to find a great executive and let him hire a good coach. If anything the possibility of a lockout says to me the 49ers NEED a powerful football exec instead of a Super Coach (coach/GM).

My greatest fear in hiring the wrong guy as coach (again) is the same situation that happened with Singletary; if the guys conducting the interviews don't understand the nature of the job, they'll more likely than not make a bad decision.

I'm not only worried about hiring the wrong coach but then drafting another franchise QB that will set the franchise back another 4-5 years again.

We all talk about the next GM but does anyone know of any GM potentials from any one of the top franchises we could target?

Can I like this comment? LOL because I do! We need a football minded guy at the top, not a business man or a scout.

How does one become a GM without being a business man or a scout. A GM is just a glorified version of those two things combined.
It's unfortunate Bill handpicked Terry Donahue to be GM. What a momentous FAIL that was. Agree though, we need a top shelf GM in there.

All I know is that this is supoosed to be a copycat league and if you look around at all the consistantly good teams they all have the same thing in common: an owner that stays out of the football decisions, a solid GM, solid coaching from the head coach to to the film guy. Do we have a sinlge position coach on this team that we could ever see promoting to offensive or defensive coordinator and eventually head coach? Siefert started out as a DB coach, Holgren a Qb coach and so on. My point is good teams hire coaches that they can promote to fill coaching vacancies.

Uhhh, ya. One of them already did this year and he will be a HC in the NFL one day.

Yep.

We need a Super General Manager.

I just wish I knew who....

And who in our front office has both qualities and won't be learning on the job? What in-house GM-candidate has ever hired a successful coach and understands what he needs to say about his potential staff and what answers he needs to give in an interview? I can answer that - there is no one on the 49ers other than maybe Tom Gamble.

There's a reason why good GMs are hard to find and not a dime a dozen. If you think every GM is just a glorified scout some business skills, there would be a lot more successful front offices.

I was trying to ask what the difference is between a "football minded guy" and a top scout with NFL business skills? You're the one that said a scout or businessman wont cut it but a "football minded guy" will. That's all. You tell me.

Did anyone else catch an interview with Eddie D ( I can't remember th source) where he stated the Niners were lacking solid football people up top and that wholesale changes were coming to the niners? I'm assuming and praying that means a proven GM, who will in turn hire a solid coach. As John McVay was being announced to the crowd during the Bucs game (to a sparse applause by the way for some reason) I coulodn't help but think about how solid the front office was during that five Superbowl run. McVay was there from 1980 to 1996 and never got the praise he deserved. This niner team needs someone like McVay right now! Please Eddie D, talk to your little protege Jed and stear him in the right direction.

One good thing to come out of the MaC/Sing failures is that no fan is going to be irate about Jed cleaning house after this year. There will be no looking back and wondering what if?

We gave Sing his shot. Alex was given more time here than anyone else would have given him. We don't have a GM. Most can take or leave our OC and DC. Most position coaches have been here for years and have not really blossomed.

Jed is free to make any and all changes in the world and us as the fans are more than happy to accept them; in fact, were demanding them!

Umm... I think the point was that we need a guy who knows the inner workings of The League and knows what qualities to look for in a Head Coach. Not that they shouldn't have business and scouting acumen.

We need a guy who brings the full package instead of this hodgepodge Front Office of Jed York "Yes Men".

Did I answer your question?

Well, that's exactly what was said.

In a response to a post in which he was expressing agreement that clearly did not state that. I was merely pointing out to you that it was probably not meant in the way it was written.
Also Bill Polian started out as a scout, as did Ozzie Newsome. Probably the two most respected GMs in the NFL today.

NFL GM's are generally very good scouts that rose up the ranks of the league that also have very good business skills. That's what they are, a glorified combo of a good scout and businessman.
As for the coach part of the GM's duties, I highly doubt that there is even one NFL ownership group that lets their GM hire the head coach without any input. Even the most powerful GMs consult with the owners before hiring a coach.

I don't think that it can't work, I think it isn't the right route for this front office right now.

They need an experienced guy, who knows the League from top to bottom.

As well they should... the ownership is the one paying the salary.

The General Manager needs to be a guide for ownership. They need to work together.

My hope is that we bring in someone with a ton of knowledge and experience who can work with Jed and teach him the ropes, then after the GM retires Jed will be a capable team president.

That make sense?
