Playing around with a bit, the most realistic playoff route for the 49ers is:

SF: L @ GB, W vs SEA, L @ SD, W @ STL, W vs ARI (finish 7-9, 5-1 division record)

SEA: W vs CAR, L @ SF, L vs ATL, L @ TB, W vs STL (7-9)

STL: W @ ARI, L @ NO, W vs KC, L vs SF, L @ STL (7-9)

For those playing the home game, note that we'd be 4-8 after playing GB and two games out after the Hawks and Rams play the two worst teams in the league, and still have a realistic shot at the playoffs.

Also, it is possible for either SF or Seattle to win the West and enter the playoffs at 6-10. A likely scenario would be playing against the #5 seed, which could be New Orleans with a 12-4 record, or double the wins of the team with home field advantage.

Although, I think the argument is a bit blown out of proportion (even though it holds great warrant). Realistically, the Rams will probably win 3 more games (as well as the division) for the 8-8.

People have been calling our division the weakest in the league for years now. The funny thing is we have represented the NFC in the superbowl more than any other division in the conference in the past 10 years. I understand the teams are looking really weak right now, but my point is once you are in the playoffs it is a moot point.
