Smith is the only one with a chance to redeem himself. Carr is too old. Russel and Leaf were doomed from the get go with their attitudes.

Need to include Akili Smith, Tim Couch, and Todd Marinovich (sp?). I think Smith would look even worse in comparison. Just watching how well Bradford is doing is making me sick. If Smith was in the 2010 draft and taken by the Rams, he'd still be waiting to throw his first TD pass. And there would be tons of excuses waiting for him... rookie QB, got thrown to wolves, injured RB, no WR's, rookie LT, defensive minded HC that doesn't know how to handle QBs, and on and on.
I've not missed a single game since late 1981 and I have never hated any 49er before until Alex "the bust" Smith showed up on this team. Someone said this is pathological with me. It is. I hate the guy with a passion. He has ruined this team for 6 years straight. The raiders ripped off the bandaid with one swift move and got their mistake over with, and they instantly experienced addition by subtraction and got better. We had to sit and convince ourselves year after year that everything else was the problem and not Smith. Such stupidity.
darn it. Who woulda known the golden era was ever gonna end.
I'm pretty sure this teams suckage has nothing to do with the front office and coaching staff that has been picked the past 6 years.
You think Smith would be lighting it up like Bradford if was drafted this year by them?
He'd be laying the same eggs he did with us, and still hoping for his first touchdown of the season. The fact that he had the WORST rookie season of any #1 overall QB in NFL history is telling, and you can't blame it on anything but him. #1 overall pics by defintion go to the worst teams in the NFL (like the Rams, before Bradford that is).

It's hard to compare to Bradford though. Bradford seems like a stud among #1 picks (though to be honest, that's the expectation for #1 picks)
Not saying Alex Smith WOULD have success with the Rams, but he was drafted by a team that just went 2-14.
Who knows what level Alex Smith could've played at though. We mismanaged him poorly. It's apparent he could never be Peyton Manning or Drew Brees, but I'm sure, under a solid coaching staff and surrounding cast, he would've at least been a decent QB. Now he's just this guy that you WANT to succeed, yet... he doesn't.

This. Alex Smith has ruined the 49ers for the past 6 years. I'm glad it will be over soon.

Unfortunately, we all know... he's hot garbage.

The Rams were just as bad last year as we were in 2004. Also, we didn't mismanage Smith in 2005, that's just how NFL busts play. The mismanagement with Smith didn't really start until 2007.
