Coffee was a solid running back in college and did what they asked him to do here...and that was part of the problem - Singletary wanted him to be a "stick-a-foot-in-the-ground-and-cut-up-the-middle" type of runner when that was not what worked for him in college. He was more than that in college, but as with Alex Smith, they coached him away from his natural style of play.
If they had allowed him to just play, he might have actually enjoyed it enough to stay and be a good player. However, when you take a young player and coach the "fun" out of the game, they lose their motivation. Though I have no inside knowledge, I am relying only on my knowledge of having coached a bunch of kids over quite a few years, I believe Coffee left the team because of his faith AND the fact he was a square peg being forced into a round hole.
Just as in the case of Alex Smith, the coaches created the player he became...and Coffee left because of it...and Alex will do the same at the end of this season.
Two wasted high picks that can be left on the doorstep of poor coaching.
