Didn't see many seam route type passes - except for that one late in the game.
Like a previous poster said, what were the Tampa coverages like? Can't really tell from watching on TV. But I would guess that they risked that Troy Smith can't make throws down the middle of the field consistently while in the pocket, and Troy Smith and our coaching staff proved them right.
Their safeties were sitting in lounge chairs about 20 yards down the field. We threw the ball over 15 yards ONCE before we were down 21 and there were less than 5 minutes left in the game.
Did it look like there was space in the middle from 20 yards in for our tight ends and/or slot receivers to operate as long as Troy Smith could deliver the ball? Quick slants, hooks? Three-step drops from Troy Smith? Or even those funky quick jump passes that Jeff Garcia made all the time?
It seems to me that this coaching staff fell for Tampa's past performances against the run and reverted to the conservative "run Frank Gore" up the middle offense. Tampa's D catered to Mike Singletary's philosophy and he set the guidelines to Mike Johnson for this week's gameplan. "Keep it simple, run Frank Gore."
If the coaching staff even gave thought to Tampa maybe rolling its coverages deep and to the outside, they may have conceded that Troy Smith, due to his lack of height, would still have problems passing over the Tampa middle, instead of figuring out creative ways to attack it.
outstanding reply.
the middle was open all day.
again, the opposing coach was playing chess will our coach was still reading the directions on how to play checkers.
NO ADJUSTMENTS! i think this is what kills me more than anything-week in and week out. it's one thing to get beat by a better team, it's another to get whooped because your coach has decided to cage all his lions.
