The Obvious Troy Smith Comparison

If the 9ers beat Tampa Bay and Troy Smith puts up good numbers...there will be a lot of cyber worship going on.

He does have some of the Jeff Garcia "thing" going. He might be more poised and have a better arm.

Don't get me wrong -- I really enjoy watching Troy Smith. He has put a visible spark into this team, but damn. Let's not get carried away. Two wins.

Like I said, he makes me more excited than I've been about the 49ers all year -- s**t, probably more like in a couple years... but again. 2 starts. Let's give him a couple more before we start even flirting with comparisons. Especially when you quote some people say he is like Drew Brees... I mean, come on.

Jeff Garcia is listed at 6'1", but in person, he's damn near the same height as me. I'm 6'2" barefoot. Troy Smith is listed at 6' even, but he was standing right next to Frank Gore before the STL game and he looked maybe an inch taller. Gore is 5'9" on a good day. I think 6' even might be a bit of a stretch for Troy.

His mobility and the things he can do outside the pocket negate his height disadvantage, though.

I'm sorry but I don't believe you.....not saying you are lying...but Jeff was listed at 6'-1" yes, but Rattay was listed at 6'0" and they looked the same height. And another commentator (forgot who) said that he played golf with Jeff and he is not 6'1".

to believe that Jeff is really 6'2" is hard....Steve Young was 6'2"

but anyway about the comparison with Jeff and Troy. Troy has a stronger arm and the confidence to throw passes.... Jeff was like Alex for a while... he would miss passes that hit the ground before reaching the WR or over throw players.... and he would also "attempt" to throw deep along the sidelines...but most of the time they would sail out of bounds.

Troy seems to have an accurate deep ball...as well as just accurate passes in general....I REALLY hope this continues .

Every QB listed as 6'0" in the old days was probably 5'9" or 5'10". Fran Tarkenton was listed at 6'0" and 190, the guy is lucky to be 5'10' and 170 soaking wet with $100 worth of pennies in his pockets, and he was pretty good. Doug Flutie was only 5'9", while it would be nice if Troy was 6'4" I think he will be just fine.

I agree he will be fine, but it would make his job a lot easier if he was 6'4". It might be a little hard to see your targets when a bunch of 6'5" linemen are in front of you.

Linemen are only getting bigger and taller. If there are a bunch of 6'5" linemen rushing Troy and he's 6'4", how does that make things any better? It means he still wouldn't be able to see "over" the line unless he was actually taller than them and how many QBs in the NF: are taller than their offensive linemen?

Yeah, Troy is a legit 6' tall, unless a room full of scouts are gonna lie about it.

I keep hearing people say he's shorter... he does look short, but how do you argue with measurements that were witnessed by a room full of guys who care about this stuff?

They aren't getting that much taller the human race is getting taller over time, but it is a negligible gain. Lineman are getting a lot heaver but they haven't grown any over the last 30 years, there have been hordes of 6'4" guys playing DL since the leather helmet days.

well alex smith is 6'4" and he sucks, drew brees is 6'0" and he's great. Alex gets his balls batted down at the LOS all the time.

QB's need about one year to be accurately evaluated in the NFL, hopefully Troy keeps ballin

Kinda agree. I am super hopeful he keeps this up, but I never underestimate the ability of the NFL to do their homework and make someone who looks like an all pro coming out of the gate look average. Not in just football, an unknown new guy with talent can look really good until teams know how to deal with him. I still remember how dominant Rattay looked in 2003 his first 2 starts. Of course he had a pretty good team.

On the other hand, only those errant last second throws is the only weakness I've seen in Troy Smith. And 2 times out of 3 they worked. People say he has to move around to make a throw, well he did that when protection breaks down which it seems to do alot this year and he does it exceptionally well. When the protection was there and he threw from the pocket, he's accurate there as well. If teams are going to try to "keep him in the pocket", I don't see how that's going to hurt Troy's game all that much. He's shown such good poise and elusiveness I'm wondering just how teams are going try to game plan against him effectively.

It's not too early to say Troy is better than Jeff "happy feet" Garcia in both those areas. He is also more of a natural leader.

as of right now the only comparison I see is their height and they both play qb.

Ditto.... Totally different style of play... Garcia had happy feet more like Alex very nervous in the pocket... Troy is more poised inside the pocket from what I see, almost trust his line to much..
