SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS VS. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS GAMEDAY THREAD (Week 11)

The Bucs are horrible at stopping 3rd down conversions, and 2/3 of the teams Tampa lost to (Falcons/Saints), a TE (Shockey/Gonzalez) burnt the s**t out of them!

I could see Johnson setting up 'trap' formations throughout the game, and just burning the f**k out of them with Davis/Walker/Gore! Seriously, this game really only stems down to defense/o-line discipline, we should win this game.

Rewatched last weeks game last night. Now that's how the two tight end set needs to be used. I hated the 2 TE set under Jimmy. Now I'm psyched at the possibilities.
The bucs have given up 13 pass plays of 30 more yards this year

But it seems that everytime we face a team with a sub-par rush defense, they stuff our run...and everytime we face a team with an anemic pass-rush, they tag us for 7 sacks.

Not true at all. Look at the defenses we've faced, adjusted for opponents' strength:

SEA = 16th
NO = 13th
KC = 11th
ATL = 4th
PHI = 26th
OAK = 9th
CAR = 20th
DEN = 30th
STL = 18th

So the only sub-par rush d team we failed against was Philly. Gore had great games vs. the rest.

I exaggerate of course and that was not meant to be taken at face value.

My point is that opposing teams more often than not gameplan or adjust their gameplan through the course of the game better than we do (as we have so roundly criticized Mike Singletary and his staff). Mike Johnson seems to be doing better, but Tampa definitely isn't taking this game lightly and even with their 6-3 record, this is a critical game for them to keep pace with Atlanta and NO.

You can bet that their D is putting together a gameplan keyed to stopping Frank Gore, and taking risks with their Cover-2 on the passing game to narrow the width of the field and keep Troy Smith in the middle and force him to make consistent passes over the middle. Maybe Tampa, among other things, will bring up their MLB closer to the line. They might take chances on our TE's with seam routes but the key is still Troy Smith hitting the TEs over the middle and they are risking that he cannot do that consistently enough. In a game of cat and mouse, will our OC stay one step ahead of the oposing D? Our record hasn't been good. We shall see.

Yes -- the other 31 teams in the NFL game-plan for the 49ers around Gore. Their goal is to ALWAYS try and take him out of the game.

There are two ways to do this:

1. stack the box and force our young QBs to beat them.

2. take a lot of deep shots early, get a two-score lead, and force the 49ers to abandon the running game.

If a defense cannot take Gore out of the game, we either win or brain-fart away a victory. Look at this season:

wk 1: Seattle jumped out to an early lead and we abandoned the running game.
wk 2: we ran all over them, then gave the game away through turnovers
wk 3: KC shut down Gore AND jumped out in the first half.
wk 4: Nate Clements fumbled the Win away
wk 5: Philly totally shut down Gore: 2.75 YPC!
wk 6: Gore Shredded the raiders
wk 7: Gore ran all over them, but David Carr came in and had the worst performance I have ever seen by a QB.
wk 8: 120 yards for Gore - win
wk 9: 155 total yards for Gore - win. If it weren't for the penalties, Gore would have racked up an extra 50 yards on the ground running the clock out.

Nicely done, Nick.

I had prepared these statistics to refute his argument, but it basically did it already.

You sure about that? The statistics say otherwise.

Yards Per Carry By Weekly Opponent and NFL Rank
Week 1 - Seattle - 2.6 YPC (8th in YPG)
Week 2 - New Orleans - 5.5 YPC (17th in YPC)
Week 3 - Kansas City - 2.9 YPC (11th in YPC)
Week 4 - Atlanta - 3.5 YPC (17th in YPC)
Week 5 - Philadelphia - 3.4 YPC (14th in YPC)
Week 6 - Oakland - 5.1 YPC (26th in YPC)
Week 7 - Carolina - 4.5 YPC (14th in YPC)
Week 8 - Denver - 3.4 YPC (25th in YPC)
Week 10 - St. Louis - 3.8 YPC (17th in YPC)

The 49ers have faced just two teams with poor (Ranked 20+) rushing defenses.

Against Oakland, Gore rushed for 149 yards on 25 carries (6 YPC).

Against Denver, the 49ers gave Frank Gore a career high 29 carries, which reduced his first half average substantially. Gore averaged 5.8 YPC in the first half (12 / 70).

Sacks By Weekly Opponent and NFL Rank
Week 1 - Seattle - 2 Sacks (6th in Sacks)
Week 2 - New Orleans - 0 Sacks (16th in Sacks)
Week 3 - Kansas City - 5 Sacks (16th in Sacks)
Week 4 - Atlanta - 1 Sack (19th in Sacks)
Week 5 - Philadelphia - 2 Sacks (6th in Sacks)
Week 6 - Oakland - 2 Sacks (3rd in Sacks)
Week 7 - Carolina - 2 Sacks (27th in Sacks)
Week 8 - Denver - 0 Sacks (27th in Sacks)
Week 10 - St. Louis - 5 Sacks (1st in Sacks)

The 49ers offensive line has yet to give up more than five sacks in any game (contrary to your recollection of 7).

Wow, I didnt realize my post was making an argument that had to be refuted by clear-cut stats.

"I exaggerate of course and that was not meant to be taken at face value."
LOL Sapp was dogging Collinsworth on Inside the NFL this week cause Chris was picking Tampa over San Fran (cause Staley is out), and Sapp kept repeating, "they don't have no pass-rushers, they don't have no pass-rushers, it's all on offense for Tampa."

Seriously, we couldn't have a more comfy week to ease Sims/Snyder/both into the mix before heading out to Zona. Tampa's pass-rush is (statistically) weaker than Denver's (and Troy evaded their slow-ass OLBs without even breaking a sweat).

the only thing that scares me about this game is Freeman airing it out over our pathetic safties.

Sapp was referring to the fact that Tampa's pass-rush is mediocre/highly 'suspect', and is citing the argument of which that Tampa has only (realistically) won a chunk of their games because of Josh Freeman's 4th quarter consistency.
