OT is one if no the hardest position to come into the NFL and start, not to mention he is the youngest layer in the league. Trust me, what you see now is as bad as its going to be and he will be good...if not great. Bulaga on the other hand looks horrible, not promising at all.

I agree with you on Davis. He's made a few mental mistakes and gotten off balance in pass pro a few too many times but I think he's shown enough to convince me he was a good pick. Plus I love seeing him run down field on runs and shove guys off of Gore. Gotta love his passion right now,

That seems fair to me. Unless a rookie making rookie mistakes is grounds for umbrage, Davis has performed about as well as can be expected. My only complaint against Davis is shared by the entire O-line, why does Solari have them playing so up and down, especially in run blocking? Obviously, that's a coaching thing and not a problem exclusive to Davis.

With the season all but in the tank, I figure we may as well ride the bomb and get Davis as blooded as possible during what remains of this season. He's playing well enough to keep learning on the job.

Yup, and if I remember correctly, Staley was pretty darn good at RT his rookie year. I hope next season Davis is at LT with Staley at RT.

No he wasn't.

He gave up 8 sacks in his rookie year on the right side. When he moved to LT, he then gave up 8.5 sacks. Both statistics rank in the bottom 10 of starting Ts.

That Joe Staley is a good RT is a big myth. He's nothing more than an average T at best.

Statistics are meaningless when your quarterbacks are running into the sacks.

Fantastic, then give some other way to quantify that Staley was a good RT.

Truth is, there is none.

The only way to actually judge an individual Offensive Lineman is to actually look at him play. When it comes to sacks and what not, statistics like that should look at the entire o-line.

If Staley was as bad as you say he was, I don't remember there being that much complaining around here about him. I remember Staley looking pretty good for a rookie, who had to spend most of the season blocking for the statue that is Trent Dilfer and Alex Smith with his shoulder hanging off, under the amazing Hostler offense.

We don't know that AD will be better from the left side. Plus, the opponents BEST DEFENSIVE END plays there! If he's already mediocre agains the 2nd best DE, what makes you think he'll do even better agains their NUMBER ONE DE!

He's gonna get the QB killed if he plays the left side like he plays the right side. At least in the right side, the QB can see AD whiff on his block and protect himself as he's getting hit.

You make a valid point but if I may do my best Al Bundy and travel back to my high school football days. No it wasnt Polk high and I didnt score 4 TD's in one game but I did play offensive line. Footwork was a big deal. I much prefered the left side over right. I struggled to set my feet correctly in pass protection on the right. I know these guys are pros and should be able to adjust but its simply not that easy.

Davis seems to have a lot of energy and movement - he and Iupati always seem to get downfield well. I think they show a lot of spark and potential. But they are not ready yet for the NFL and perhaps we were all a bit too naive to think we could insert two rookie lineman in and expect big dividends. OL is a place where consistency and wily veterans dominate. These guys are gonna be a couple years away from getting "good." Neither one of them is Joe Thomas or Jonathan Ogden and even a stud talent like D'brickashaw Ferguson took a couple years to develop at OT.

Staley's play has been a real problem this season. He always looks like he false starts with his knee kick at the snap. The injury has got to be wearing on him. And I don't think you draft a kid at #11 and expect him to be a RT his whole career.

That being said I always thought conventional webzone wisdom was that Staley was a better pass blocker and Davis a better road grader run blocker and that would be why Staley is a better fit at LT and Davis at RT.

The one thing this team really seems to lack on the OL is any sort of speed or quickness. Quicker defends just leave them in the dust consistently. The residue of the Scotty Mac days / Nolan era of drafting giant lineman and getting rid of the Justin Smileys of the world.

Our rookies are good. There is nothing wrong with them. The problem is our predictable offense and they're learning on the job.

Did anyone just listen to the commentator doing the Carolina Niner game? He said, all they run on the line is "trap and wrap". His quote was this is "just to easy to defend when defenses know it's coming."

Period.
This fu*kin idiot nearly just got Alex killed.

He gets beat a lot on speed rushes as he doesn't get up and get his feet under him quick enough. This maybe something that is a permanent fatal flaw.

I can't believe I defended him.
rookie schmookie. He doesn't even seem to have the basic skills. Before the draft, other teams had him as a 3rd round draft pick. Doesn't surprise me that singletary would jump up to grab him in the first.
