On the opening series of the second half, the 49ers had the ball for six plays, but went backward 9 yards due to a Staley holding penalty, Michael Crabtree's false start, and Smith's intentional grounding. That's when Smith approached the offensive line at the end of the bench in hopes of getting the unit to settle down. "He was challenging us, and we were challenging him, and Alex responded to all that," Staley said. "It was real positive. We were joking after the game, 'We should start yelling at each other more often.'" The 49ers trailed 6-3, and managed no better than one first down on five of their previous six possessions. "We got a first down, but then we put ourselves in a bad situation, and I think those guys were pressing a little bit," Smith said. "I was came over just to get them to settle down. Those guys were really fired up and jacked up." Said Staley, "It wasn't like he was pointing the finger at us, and we weren't pointing the finger at him. We just knew as an offense that we could not just keep dragging along. We had to start executing. We were challenging each other. It was all positive." Staley, who considers Smith his best friend on the team, snapped back. "He commented something about throwing the football," Smith said. "Like, 'Let's get it going.'" And the next time the 49ers touched the ball, they got it going, all right. But, even then, there were some uncertain moments. On a first-and-10 from the Raiders' 22, Smith's pass intended for flanker Josh Morgan near the left sideline flew far over his head. Referee Carl Cheffers called Smith for intentional grounding, explaining with the his microphone on, "Dude, no one was there." On the next play, Smith found Crabtree in one of the rare instances Sunday in which he was not being shadowed by Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Smith and Crabtree combined on a 32-yard touchdown. CSNBA

So Smith doesn't like getting taking it from Singletary but he's all fine with dishing it out to his OL.

This team needs an edge or needs to be pissed off. Gannon's offense was his personality. So was Young's and are other QBs offenses. We have Alex's personality on offense which was ho-hum, we'll get em next time.

Now, Alex's mentality if finally beginning to change and get more chippy and so is the offense's. He needs to start acting like a QB in terms of expecting perfection. He doesn't need to yell or anything like that, but he needs to let it be known that he expects perfection.

Unfortunately, it starts at practice.

Unfortunately it's too late. Another lost season. Now they will go on a meaningless win streak, just miss the playoffs and screw up their draft position.
