not sure why that is so hard to understand.

Exactly. 15 turnovers in 5 GAMES?!?!?! WTF!!!!!! That is RIDICULOUS! No way you can expect to win like that. Absolutely horrendous for an offense.

And don't forget we went 3-1 last year because 3 out of our first 4 games were against divisional opponents.... Teams we're able to beat unlike outer-divisional opponents.

because everyone wants to put all of the blame on Alex Smith. He is the reason for all the evils and wrong doings in the world.

seriously, its sad. I hope he has a great game on Sunday, but if he doesn't, I hope we just cut him so we can stop hearing so many people whine and b***h about him. I can't take it anymore.

despite your "exactly," I don't think you actually read my post, since you seem to be blaming only the offense.

team losses yes, but when the offense turns the ball over that many times it really doesn't help the defense in terms of field position.

I am to that point as well. I would much rather him succeed and be sucessful in a 49er uniform for many years to come, but jeebus Cryst some of these fans cry more than babies. Ohh the defense allowed 24 pts, oh it's Alex's fault. Oh my girlfriend said I have a small penis and is sleeping with the entire neighborhood, oh it's Alex's fault. The economy is s**t and I haven't worked in 6 months, I'm losing my house, my car has been repossessed and my dog died, oh it's Alex's fault. Football is a team sport and it takes a team to win and a team to lose.

team sport yes? how's the offense helping out the "team" by turning the ball over that many times, sometimes putting the defense in a bad position? Regardless, the offense has played a huge role just as much as the defense. But 15 turnovers in 5 games is a big statistic.

to be fair, Alex's favorite hobby is mutilating stranger's dogs, so people do have a point there.

but yeah. one of the things that got me excited about this season (before it started-lol) was the fact that this was the once-and-for-all last chance for Smith, that we would know for sure if he could be "the guy." I thought it was risky to go "all-in" on him, especially with McNabb available, but I really did think that he would rise to the occasion and have a good year. But the fact is that WE ALL knew that this year was his last chance and that we were sink or swim with him, so its hard to understand why people are being so hysterical about it. He'll either earn a chance to stay here or he won't. What the hell is the point in crying about it every day?

read over this conversation and see how absurd you sound.

"team losses" means that every facet of the team has contributed to our losses. The obvious implication of this was that it was silly to blame only the offense, which was what was happening in this thread prior to my posting that. You responded in agreement with me...and proceeded to blame only the offense. Absurd.

I just wish that Singletary would realize that the offense is better in a spread offense instead of forcing this damn smashmouth football ever game. But you are correct, there is no point in crying about it.

I never said I only blamed the offense, I said the offense really has not helped out the defense at all in terms of field position and momentum. But, I am pleased at how much longer the offense has been out on the field, giving the defense a rest for a while. 3rd down conversions have been a big improvement with Mike Johnson.

agree on that last point. I get what you're saying. I'm certainly not saying the offense is blameless. We've been careless with the ball, unprepared, and not executing and taking advantage of anything. And the exact same could be said of the defense. Maybe Ginn's return will really spark ST and tip the field-position battle enough in our favor that both O & D benefit. But everyone, from the motherf**king ball boys up to Jed York has to get better, and in a hurry.

Last year we held our opponents to an average of 18 points. I used 20 points for the Vikings game so I took away the last second TD by Favre. This year we are holding opponents to an average of 24.8 taking away the late FGs by NO and ATL. It looks like it's safe to say that if you hold your opponents to under 3 TDs you win. I'm not saying this is entirely on the defense because the offense has had plenty of blame as well, but the defense hasn't looked good for an entire 4 qtrs this year compared to last.

When this statement has to be made in terms of a defense allowing points, then there is or was something seriously wrong with the offense and in our case, it was turnovers.

Do the defensive numbers include Smith giving the other team 14 points? (pick 6, and fumble 6)

Even if the offense is holding the ball.. If they aren't putting points on the board it just puts more pressure on the D. The D can't hold up that long. At least not this young D.

I agree, then factor in the 3.5 (last I checked) turn overs per game and this D is being asked to do the impossible.

The turnovers are the big difference this year. Defense was creating turnovers, not the offense.

2010 Offense has 15 turnovers
2010 Defense has 4 INTs and 2 FF

First 5 games 2009:
2009 Offense had 5 turnovers
2009 Defense had 9 turnovers

You can see that our defensive turnovers have only dropped by a few (3), while our offensive turnovers have tripled...

We ave 15 turnovers? My lord. Let me guess, Smith is responsible for at least 35% of them.

35% x 2... well, close anyway, Smith responsible for 10 of them...

Hey backontop, the D has only created 3 less turnovers, but the O has committed 10 more! And that is the defenses fault for failing?
