Alex Smith didn't need to throw it.
Pump fake and scramble if you see pressure. Could have had a first down or a manageable 4th down. At least put the team in field goal position.
But the protection failed first, and that was the primary fault.

dude.your whole comment just defeats itself. you admit it is not Smiths fault yet you open by blasting him for throwing. from watching the video it is obvious it is A. Davis who is at fault. smith was reading the correct reciever as best as can be told by video on nfl.com. he begins his throw before pressure broke the line but A. Davis whiffed so bad Smith was hit before releasing. the line should do there job so smith can do his. he is paid to throw and the line must provide the time for that to happen.
If you just want to bash smith because you dont like him....use the fumble as an example.

but yeah. horrible call. horrible fine. somebodys got some explaining to do.

He was fined for a hit after the play was blown dead. Listen to the whistle and the announcers. There was a penalty flag.
If a whistle had not been blown Crabtree's hit would be legal. The receiver went down on his own and no one touched him before he got up making him a fair target.
But again, a whistle was blown which is why you can see in the video players pulling up. Crabtree illegally hit after the whistle.
