When you look at the stats and things like that you might see ‘Wow. He had 230 yards’, but how many of those yards came from screens. How many receptions did the running backs have? You look at certain games and a lot of times the elite receivers are the running backs. Those are things that we’re going to get because we have a very good defense in my eyes and an exceptionally good front seven, so I think that’s one of the ways the offenses are going to attack us. The first four plays, we had four screens from Philly, and it’s been that way. Same with New Orleans. Same with Kansas City and same thing with Seattle.

Interesting insight, I've always been a fan of Spencer, and I like what he says in the end!

Sounds like excuses to me. Offenses didn't kill the 2000 Ravens or the Bucs or the 04 Steelers or the 08 Steelers with screens. It's just a weakness our team doesn't seem to be convinced that they need to fix. It's like when Manusky said it was fine that Nate tried to score, they're just convinced you don't need to do anything about it. Our coaches don't take the smart approach. To me it sounds like he's saying "well we're good enough so teams will just try to screen us to death and that's okay". It's really not.

edit: and then when he says "well it was 17 points we couldn't really control", WTF is that s**t? Plenty of other teams don't get burned on the first drive of the game. I understand letting them off the hook for the Smith fumble, but how about Gore's fumble that was at their 40 and they got a FG out of it or whatever? How about trying to bail Gore out? Of course if you don't count the times you performed like s**t then you'll look good. That's like saying after I play basketball "well I only missed some shots because I couldn't force them to go in the basket, but if you look at the shots I made I'm an absolute baller". This defense is giving up 26 PPG and they're full of themselves and they're 0-5. Ugh, I wish we had a guy like Parcells as coach.

So what do you want them to do at this point? Fire everyone in the middle of the season? Yeah, that would be great for the team.

The only sane thing to do is leave the Head Coach and QB where they are, and hope for better games.

At the end of the season, I have no doubt that Singletary will be fired if the team does not win the division; and even if it does, I think Sing needs to go (and I was always a big Sing defender).

But for God's sake, stop with the ranting and raging about Jed's doing nothing or fire Sing or get rid of Smith. If you really want a playoff team sooner rather than later, then we need to let them play the rest of this year and hope; and if they do not produce - THIS YEAR - then IT WILL BE TIME TO throw the bums off the team!

I agree with you about the solution but I just feel like it's a problem in our whole philosophy. The main thing to me anyway is it feels like Spencer's making excuses like "well we only have problems with screen passes, but we can't control those". It's like dude, that's your job. Your job is to stop them period. Not just stop them from doing a few things here and there. I never said to fire everyone now. But at the end of the season I feel like Sing needs to go for sure, and probably Manusky too. I don't really like him but I hope we get a run started here. But I don't like his philosophy.

Yeah ummmm Sreens are supposed to be identified by the Safety actually.

When the RB comes around the edge with NO BALL in his hands the FS(Spy) is supposed to account for him. The Strong Safety stays over the top to help the DBs' and the LBs'(In 3-4) are supposed to hang back and Defense the Pass depending on which side the Protection "breaks down" while the other side makes a Beeline to interrupt the pass from the QB.

We get burned by it cause Manusky isn't up in the booth. Not because our Front 7 sucks, but because we cannot adjust to how the opponent sets their screen.

Spencer is right. Our front 7 is solid. Unfortunately they have no clue what to look for on the screen cause Manusky is on the field too. He only sees half the play.

I'm to the pont now that if Sing gets fired Manusky should be fired too. I do not want to promote anybody from this current coaching staff except for maybe Rathman. It's sad that we're at this point cause last year our Defense was stout. Now everyone just runs a screen instead of Running the ball and that's how their Backs get yards against us.

Hey Ceadder, wasn't Manusky in the booth last year? I didn't realize he was on the field until you mentioned it. I'm not saying putting him back in the booth is gonna solve everything but maybe he should go back up there to get a better perspective.

Manusky being in the booth has nothing to do with it. Teams killed the 49ers with the screen pass last year over and over.

I'm surprised we can't stop the screens and check downs, thats all the defense must be seeing in practice?
Beat the screen.

Seriously, an entire year under Raye and practice? No doubt "check downs" was all the defense can see and practice against given they wanted A;ex to get rid of the ball under 3 seconds.

Maybe Spencer should stop effing around in practice. He got DESTROYED early last game. Given it's usually the CB who checks off his man and runs up the field to make the tackle on screens most of the time, he should ask Nate how to do it.

And really? Screens are what the mass majority of the yards have been? He's 1/2 right there but what about all the yards the CB's give up in prevent while the WR's march right down the field on out-routes to stop the clock and kick FG's to beat us? Or the CONSTANT 3rd and long passes right down the middle of the field?

I agree screens and wheel routes have been killing us for several years now. It's become even more epidemic this year b/c it seems Manusky is playing even more vanilla then last year and SO far down the field QB's can walk right down the field untouched for 18 yards on a 3rd and 15. Vanilla scheme is hurting this defense too. Poor coaching is killing what little talent we do have on defense.

How about trying some "team tackling" too? Maybe some clutch drills?

After reading AF's comments too, it's just amazing how delusional these guys on defense are. At least TKO seems genuine about losing o the Eagles.

The bottom line is that there is NO accountability on this team and nobody pushing these tards for their job so what do they care? They got paid and some will probably leave the first chance they get to go to a contender which at this point, is anyone but us.

Here's the breakdown: All RB's receiving of Total Receiving
Seattle = 29 of 170
New Orleans = 105 of 254
Kansas City = 70 of 250
Atlanta = 33 of 273
Philadelphia = 65 of 253

Sorry Spencer, you're full of @#$%^&*
