I'll tell you this. When all the chanting was going on for carr, and I was watching alex fall apart, and then get yelled at by singletary. (I need to forwarn this...I am a youth pastor, but my personality is a coach. I teach kids how to succeed, how to do better, and I encourage them, go to their games, take them out to eat, and my kids know that I Love them and want them to succeed) So when I watch this kid failing and the whole country watching his collapse, My heart sank. I litterally had to pause the game (I had it one DVR) because I almost cried.

When he got mad, and came back. There was something so different. He was pissed. He was like, I'm going to make this happen, and I dont care who is in my way. For the first time, I became an Alex fan. Seriously. I hope this guy can turn this around, I will root for him. He can do it, I believe in him.

There is a fudemental diffrence my friend (no pun intended). Alex is not a kid, he is a grown man. He's made well over 25 million bucks and is married to a Raider cheerleader. He has also had more chances than a cat have lives.

What does his financial and marital status have to do with anything?

I'm not going to say that money and love is the key to happiness, but I would dare to say he will probably live a more privledged life than 98 percent of the people viewing this forum. I'm not going to get too teary eyed over a tough 15 minutes of his life.

Too add, I guess the way the paragraph was written was like he is some poor little helpless teenager. My point was that he is a very successeful grown ass man.

How well do you think any of us would have held up to that kind of intense pressure? The money didn't matter then. Alex was being ripped apart by his fans and his coach on National TV. If it really was all about the money and the wife, he could have chucked it in right there. It wasn't. Alex was being challenged a level deeper than material and marital success for the whole world to see. The vast majority of men would have folded right there and then. I suspect I would have. How about you? I suspect more than a few other NFL quarterbacks would have also folded under that pressure. Alex didn't. That leads me to believe there is more to him then what we have seen so far. I just hope he embraces it now and sheds everything that has held him back.

Sir, I dont disagree with anything you said. The fact that Smith responded the way he did shows me he has some moxy and the situation wasn't too big for him. Now if he would of started crying and ran of the field like a little girl (I picture adam sandler playing the role), then maybe I would of felt a little worst.
The point about the money and wife is to say the more success you have in life, the more likely you have the confidenance to deal with pressure as you can look around to your other accomplishments for some self assurance (q 25 mill in the bank and hot wife walking across stage). Thats all I'm saying.
Finally, you are right. I would of folded like a lawn chair however I am also not use to that type of pressure where as Alex has been around the big stage for many years now.

You guys missed Floyds point. The guys a pastor. He viewed Alex as a young human being on Sunday. You could have 50 billion dollars but that doesn't cover up the feeling you have when you're being boooed endlessly on national TV and about to be benched. I don't want Smith as our QB much longer but I still felt for the guy as one dude to another. Everyone has has low moments in their life when everything seemed to not work out.
Why did it take till Game 5 of the season for the Seam pass up the middle to Vernon Davis?

Twice.

...

Oh, I f**king know why. It's the first game we played in the spread for more then a few plays. f**k off Singletary. Open this s**t up, and get the ball to your players, god dammit! Vernon deserves 7-10 throws and so does Crabs. Gore will average more then 3 per carry if we open this s**t up, I have no doubt about that.
I re-watched the game also, and I'm surprised Gore hasn't gotten as much heat from the 'Zone as Alex has. The OP is right, it's so easy to put the blame on Smith.

I don't know if Alex is he future or not, but he played one heck of a game last week.

Ya know, its amazing what can happen when you rewatch a game and alot of the tension is removed. You see things quite a bit differently. I think you end up seeing things the way fans of other teams see them.

Anyway....many things stood out.

1) The play of Alex Smith
2) The playcalling of Mike Johnson
3) The Play of Michael Crabtree
4) The problems on D.

1) Alex: This is well covered territory and I know I'm not breaking any ground here, but I watched him very closely when I watched the game again. I know this won't be popular, but he actually played pretty damn well even before the argument with Singletary.

I was on the verge of calling for the Yorks to blow the team up and waive goodbye to Alex, but now I'm not so sure.

He made 2 mistakes. One was the INT on the deep pass to Ginn. Ya, it wasn't a great pass, but those things are low % throws so I can't blame him for taking the shot we have been wanting him to take all season. It would also help if Ginn made more of an effort on the ball, but it was still not a great throw and was Alex's fault. The theres the fumble. No excuse. Horrible. He'd be the first to tell you that. That simply can't happen. Period. The final INT of the game tho was really Anthony Davis fault. If you watch, Alex makes the decision to throw the ball BEFORE the DE breaks free of Davis. Alex didn't have a chance.

Other than that tho....he looked GOOD. I mean REALLY good. If you don't believe me, watch the game again. The drives that stalled did so because of turnovers. The Niners punted only ONCE until there were 5 minutes left in the THIRD quarter. Alex was hitting passes on third down. He was hitting passes for 15 and 20 yards, so they weren't just checkdowns. He was hitting Crabtree, Ginn, Davis, Morgan, Gore....he was getting EVERYONE involved. He hit Ginn for almost 20 yards on a 3rd and ONE. He hit Davis for about 25 yards on 3rd and 15.

After the confrontation with Sing, he was even better.

Smith is everyones favorite scapegoat. To be fair he has at times made it easy to scapegoat him. Sunday tho....he played pretty damn well. If you don't believe me, watch the game again.

2) Johnson: I was reading yesterday that there were peeps here who were critical of MJs playcalling. WATCH THE GAME AGAIN. He was AGGRESSIVE. The Niners punted ONCE until 5 min left in the 3rd quarter and only punted 3 times in the entire game. One of those punts came after three consecutive incomplete passes. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the turnovers happened on a drive in which the 49ers had gotten a first down. They were moving the ball. The second Gore fumble was after back to back playes of 25 yards (pass to Davis) and 17 yards (run by Gore).

After watching this game again, I am not concerned at all about the playcalling.

3) Crabtree: Crabtree started to look like the guy who played at Texas Tech. The attribute of his game that has been missing so far is his run-after-catch ability. He showed it on some nifty plays down the sideline. He also ran a great route and made a great catch on his TD. What strikes me the most tho are the length of his arms. LOL. Serously...he looks like a freak. Watch him when he puts his arms up after scoring the TD...I swear to got he could fly with those things...lol.

4) The D: This is the one that concerns me. They to often find themselves out of position and have a reciever running through the secondary with nobody within 5-10 yards of them. Kolb looked good, but when a guy is that open, its pretty hard to miss them. The run D has also been showing some cracks of late. Some have said that WIllis may be hurt, but I don't think thats it. I think he's getting covered up by lionemen more than in the past. He hasn't been able to run free. I dunno if thats something offenses are doing or if its the D not protecting him. I just hope they fix it.

I'm also concerned about Mays. Its not that he played poorly. He just seems a step slow right now (although he caused the fumble that the Eagles recovered). Its not about his potential...I'm just not sure he was ready to play. We'll see and I hope he proves me wrong.

Alex leads the league in turnovers and the statistic that matters most; losses. True A.D. could and should have blocked better on that last int. But guess what, the team would not have even been in that postion if Alex hits a WIDE OPEN Gore on a simple swing pass that would have went for big yards if not a TD. I don't want to hear that the defensive player did his job to disrupt the play. That is what they get paid to do (except SOAP- who rarely makes ANY plays). It was Alex's job to hit a wide open Gore. So, personally I don't care how many times anyone watches the game and attenpts to justify the results; Alex needs to have a strong team behind him in order to win; of which he does not have. He is no better than JT who was benched but at least won. He is no better than Hill who at least won. Just as they were benched, Alex should be benched too.

The same goes for Gore. All too often he has let this team down when needed; two fumbles? Remember when the blade of grass tackled him at the goal line a few years ago? He needs to sit too.
I wish you would have been around when Montana was playing. Those non-stop love-fests could have used some of your "objectivity." Man, fans would just overlook how he would roll out and throw the ball out of bounds when he had John Frank wide open down the middle. He also had terrible touch on the ball. I remember on game when Too Tall Jones AND Harvey Martin knocked down passes that he should have elevated over them to get to receivers that were wide open. It used to drive me crazy how people would overlook the fact that this guy wasn't perfect. I wanted absolute perfection every time but Joe got bailed out by the defense most of the time after some of his bonehead plays.

Just look at how Ryan Leaf reacted to adversity. He snapped. Say what you will about Alex, but he stepped up.

The problem with this team is not Alex Smith. His teammates would be the first to tell you. The problem with this team is a lack of an offensive philosophy that fits the personnel we have. That, and we have the worst offensive line in the league.
According to footballoutsiders, we have been stuffed in the backfield on only ten percent of our runs, lowest in the league. But our second level, and open field yards are 30 and 29 respectively. That tells me that Frank is outstanding at making something out of nothing and being able to get back to the line of scrimmage but to consistenly get open field and 2nd level yards you need blockers to open up holes and to press up on linebackers. Last year we were 2nd in open field yards, mainly due to how obscenely good Frank was the few times he got in the open field he took the house(see seattle). His 4.7 ypc compared i cant remember off top but around 2 for Coffee shows just how good Frank was last year. We arent getting those plays this year.
Secondly, offensive philosophy. Everyone knows Alex plays better from the spread, as do most qbs. The problem doesnt lie in how much we run the ball, but WHERE we run the ball. We avg 1.74 yards running sweeps left, 7.02 yards running off tackle left, 3.83 yards running from guard to guard, 5.01 yards running off tackle right and 3.01 yards running sweep left. Based off those numbers where to you think we run the ball most? Yep right up the middle. 66% of the time, second highest in the league. And it was 78% before Raye got fired. The league average is 50%. And where do we run least? Off tackle left of course. Even more than we sweep left, 4% n 6% resp. Look at the numbers from 09 and they were even worse. 3.51 ypc up the middle at 71% of the time. With the line we have, we can run up the middle, yet we try over and over again. To blame Frank or Alex is misplaced, without a decent line, we cant run the sh!t we want to, yet we keep doing it. That is coaching my friends. I like Sing as a motivator. He is by no means and x and o guy and he is completely hands off with the offense. But its his responsibility to hire an offensive coach who can get the job done and he hasnt done that.
I struggled with this all offseason, keep a OC who is terrible or hire another one and have another year without continuity. Well hindsight being what it is, we all know the answer to that one now. I am firmly in the belief with a inventive offensive mind, Alex would be a top 10 quarterback. More than any other Quarterback in the league, even Manning, Alex has to play damn near perfect for us to move the ball. He cant miss any reads, he cant sit in the pocket and wait for something to come open, the line doesnt give him enough time. He would look like Cutler against the NY Giants every week if he wasnt so smart. But he gets criticized for rolling out. If he tries to stay in the pocket he will he injured again. No question. If you want to see a guy take a sack every other play than go ahead and chant for Carr. No qb can play an entire game mistake free, running for his life every other play. Dont know what the numbers are for this year, but last year Alex was pressured on 40 percent of his dropbacks, by far the highest in the league. Im not making excuses for his bonehead mistakes but seriously, look at the rest of the NFL. Other than Manning and Brady every quarterback makes mistakes every week. Other guys are able to pick up the slack tho but the offensive line makes it almost impossible.
The one thing working in our favor is the schedule. Football outsiders has this thing call DVOA. You can look it up for a deeper explanation but basically it charts what each team does in each situation and compares them to the league average to get you a percentage over the average. How this relates to us is, or schedule we have already played is rated 16.3% better than the average. That is over 4% higher than the next closest team. So we have played by FAR the toughest sched in the L so far. Our future sched based on what they have already done this season is -18.0% which means they are 18% worse than the league average. Next closest is KC with 16%. Basically we have played by far the toughest teams so far and have the easiest road the rest of the way out. Granted some of the reason we have played teams with a 16% better than average is due to the fact that we account for 20% of that. But that has nothing to do with how much easier it will be the rest of the way.
There IS hope. Mike J is a bright guy an i already have more faith in him than i did Raye. Alex might be the smartest guy in the whole organization other than Marathe. The key for them is to find the right balance of plays that will get chunk yards, and quick passes, cuz right now we run toooooo many plays that require better blocking than we currently have. The Eagles have the same line problem that we do but inventiveness in playcalling can hide that. Thats what we dont have right now. But Alex is good enough to win in this league. But not by himself. No one but #18 is.
Marvin, great post. I just saw the game for the first time and I agree completely. I went into watching it thinking Smith's time was done and he should be benched. I was actually impressed with his play the whole game. The fumble was embarrassing, but even then I think the reason he didn't throw to Davis was he saw Davis slip on his break. No excuse for the fumble, but at least a reason why he didn't throw to Davis.

Gore, on the other hand did not look good. Why are we not playing Westbrook at all? Give Dixon some snaps. Gore is in on too many plays and if nothing else he will get injured / wear down at this rate.

I am not surprised Gore and Davis (others) stood up for Smith. He was the team's best shot at a W, and they know that.

Aftere seeing Smith respond to the boos, Singletary, etc., I don't think it will take long for another team to grab him when he's done in SF - which I think is coming. I bet he gets benched this season, and if I were him I'd ask for my release immediately. Singletary will lose the team and eventually his job (because he will keep losing).

It seems obvious that we are already wearing him down, throw a little westbrook and dix in it.
