I don't know about that. Gore had 2 turnovers that were his fault (great plays by the D too) but didn't do much in the running game to help the team win. 52 yards on 18 carries isn't going to cut it, especially when you put the ball on the carpet twice.

Alex's fumble was all on him. Bad in more ways than one (he never should have rolled out there in the first place) but he had over 300 yards and 3 TDs.

I'd still say they equally hurt us since Smith's fumble was returned for 6. Either way, the point is the offense hurts the team too much with TOs and 3 and outs. The D is going to break at some point.

The Bears D was able to stop the Panthers after The Bears QB threw 4 ints and 63 yards for the entire game

I think you forgot to mention the Panthers QB's threw 3 combined INTs. They also had 4 fumbles but none were lost.

Exactly. I didn't see much of the game, only what they showed on the RedZone channel. That's the point. The Bears D stopped them, those three INTs was part of stopping them. It's pretty cut and dry what happened when you win a game by 17 points and your QB throws 4 picks and only 63 yards. Forte was the offense, the D did the rest. Even dealing with 4 picks.

Yeah but the Panthers QB is about as good as ours. Did the Bears defense stop them or was it just poor play like our QB not making smart decisions? I wish we play against QB's like Alex Smith who try to throw passes while falling down or throw right into a defenders stomach.

My point is that Alex has been throwing to the defense or giving it to them when he had other open options on that play. That's not good defense, that's poor QB'ing.

So Clausen and Moore threw for over 300 yards and 3 TDs? The Panthers QB(s) didn't even throw for 100 yards or one TD. Chicago's D is good but so is Philly's. Actually before Sunday Philly's D was ranked higher than the Bears. Just stop posting, you're not capable of clear or critical thought.

Clausen is a rookie QB who has 1 TD and 3 Interceptions. His best game was 188 yards. He has thrown under 61 yards in two games and a 4th game with only 146 yards. Moore has thrown 0 TD and 1 Interception on the season.

Really? It's not only the Bears who have been able to "stop" these guys. They aren't doing anything against any teams.

Why don't you look at more than one game before you begin to claim a defense was great even though they played against crap QBing. You combine crap QB against a top 15 defense and you have a near shutout.

You claimed the Bears won while throwing 4 INTs because of their defense not at all acknowledging that the other teams crap QB's threw 3 INTs and that EVERY team has been able to stop those QB's and you're telling me to stop posting?

But I guess our QB turning the ball over almost 3 times per game means nothing. Now include even more turnovers by our offense overall and you say it's the defense's fault?

This offense has 6 fumbles lost and 9 INTs. That's 15 turnovers in 5 games!

This defense has gotten 5 turnovers in 5 games but no one talks about the fact that our offense should be turning those 5 turnovers into TD's. You can't make up for 15 turnovers! Seriously?

They've actually won a game because their QB and the team wasn't handing the ball to the opposition. You can't win like that. We are not 0-5 because of poor play throughout a game by our defense. We shouldn't even be in 3-point games at the end if our offense doesn't keep helping the other team.

Our QB has made more mistakes than any other QB in the league and anyone else on this team. Therefore he is the primary reason we are losing.

They've won a game? Oh, I had no idea they won a game. Maybe because some over-zealous guy on some website said they did that will make it true? Nope, Carolina is still 0-5.

I guess the Panthers are so bad they get to count moral victories.

Yeah that's a huge thing I was pointing out on Gameday, Alex was converting 3rd downs over 15-20 yard gaps almost 70% of that game! Something I've never, ever seen him do in the NFL, even against really borderline s**tty teams.

the whole team has been effin up.

the D gives up one too many yards/points and our offense turns it over more than a wh_0_re in heat!!!

we have too many penalties, too many turnovers, and give up too many points. The D could put some of the blame on offense and the offense can blame the D for giving up late scoring drives.

we only lost by 3 points after 5 turnovers. we gave the game away just like we gave it away to falcons, saints and seachics....

Wow, someone understands the basics of football. Good post. Gore was ineffective, we kept feeding him, putting Alex in third and long (like we've done ALL season), and Alex kept us in drives. Good to read a post with some actual perspective.

I know what u mean... before the drama went down with him and sing I was ready to send him packing and I was so mad with his play. I get so passionate and critical when I watch them play I oversee some of the good things that happen during the game. When every thing went down with him sing and the crowd was booing and chanting and the cameras were on Alex's face I began to feel sorry for him. Sometimes as fans we forget how much of an impact we can have. Could u imagine how he would feel for years to come if he would have been benched right at that moment... That kinda stuff would haunt a man for years!

Anyway....many things stood out.

1) The play of Alex Smith
2) The playcalling of Mike Johnson

4) The problems on D.

1) Alex: This is well covered territory and I know I'm not breaking any ground here, but I watched him very closely when I watched the game again. I know this won't be popular, but he actually played pretty damn well even before the argument with Singletary.

I was on the verge of calling for the Yorks to blow the team up and waive goodbye to Alex, but now I'm not so sure.

He made 2 mistakes. One was the INT on the deep pass to Ginn. Ya, it wasn't a great pass, but those things are low % throws so I can't blame him for taking the shot we have been wanting him to take all season. It would also help if Ginn made more of an effort on the ball, but it was still not a great throw and was Alex's fault. The theres the fumble. No excuse. Horrible. He'd be the first to tell you that. That simply can't happen. Period. The final INT of the game tho was really Anthony Davis fault. If you watch, Alex makes the decision to throw the ball BEFORE the DE breaks free of Davis. Alex didn't have a chance.

Other than that tho....he looked GOOD. I mean REALLY good. If you don't believe me, watch the game again. The drives that stalled did so because of turnovers. The Niners punted only ONCE until there were 5 minutes left in the THIRD quarter. Alex was hitting passes on third down. He was hitting passes for 15 and 20 yards, so they weren't just checkdowns. He was hitting Crabtree, Ginn, Davis, Morgan, Gore....he was getting EVERYONE involved. He hit Ginn for almost 20 yards on a 3rd and ONE. He hit Davis for about 25 yards on 3rd and 15.

After the confrontation with Sing, he was even better.

Smith is everyones favorite scapegoat. To be fair he has at times made it easy to scapegoat him. Sunday tho....he played pretty damn well. If you don't believe me, watch the game again.



2) Johnson: I was reading yesterday that there were peeps here who were critical of MJs playcalling. WATCH THE GAME AGAIN. He was AGGRESSIVE. The Niners punted ONCE until 5 min left in the 3rd quarter and only punted 3 times in the entire game. One of those punts came after three consecutive incomplete passes. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the turnovers happened on a drive in which the 49ers had gotten a first down. They were moving the ball. The second Gore fumble was after back to back playes of 25 yards (pass to Davis) and 17 yards (run by Gore).

After watching this game again, I am not concerned at all about the playcalling.


3) Crabtree: Crabtree started to look like the guy who played at Texas Tech. The attribute of his game that has been missing so far is his run-after-catch ability. He showed it on some nifty plays down the sideline. He also ran a great route and made a great catch on his TD. What strikes me the most tho are the length of his arms. LOL. Serously...he looks like a freak. Watch him when he puts his arms up after scoring the TD...I swear to got he could fly with those things...lol.


4) The D: This is the one that concerns me. They to often find themselves out of position and have a reciever running through the secondary with nobody within 5-10 yards of them. Kolb looked good, but when a guy is that open, its pretty hard to miss them. The run D has also been showing some cracks of late. Some have said that WIllis may be hurt, but I don't think thats it. I think he's getting covered up by lionemen more than in the past. He hasn't been able to run free. I dunno if thats something offenses are doing or if its the D not protecting him. I just hope they fix it.

I'm also concerned about Mays. Its not that he played poorly. He just seems a step slow right now (although he caused the fumble that the Eagles recovered). Its not about his potential...I'm just not sure he was ready to play. We'll see and I hope he proves me wrong.

well said.............our problems are with the oline and the defense giving up too many points ........need better consistency.

Just watched the game again. Alex has the stuff to get it done, but he has to make better decisions........ With exception to the turn overs, his play has improved.

Gore had a bad night, which didn't help matters. Nedney missed a field goal he should have made. Niners need to keep the 2 minute drill intensity throughout the entire game.

One thing I didn't see you mention was something I think is quite relevant in the Alex Smith conversation. That is the 3-play series immediately AFTER the horrible Smith fumble. I really think the Singletary blow-up on the sideline had more to do with that 3-play series than the fumble itself. Everyone makes physical errors sometimes. But it's how you react to those errors that defines what kind of player you are.

In this game he committed a horrible fumble that put the team 14 points down early in the 4th quarter. Now you're getting the ball right back. You're not going to tell me Drew Brees or Tom Brady are going to lose their poise at that point. They'd come in with the attitude that a TD drive gets them right back in the game. But did Alex do that? No! He had a 3-and-out: three incomplete passes, each one worse than the one before it. On the last I don't think there was a receiver within ten yards. THAT was why Sing called him out. His demeanor and his play on the field said "I give up!"

Now after Sing got in his face, he came back on the field and was even better than he had been earlier in the game.

Alex has shown this year for the first time that he CAN BE AN NFL QUARTERBACK! The next two or three games will determine whether he will be an NFL quarterback for us, or whether he'll be one for someone else.

I hope it's for us, because I'd hate to waste 6 years turning him into a real quarterback for another team!

There is a fudemental diffrence my friend (no pun intended). Alex is not a kid, he is a grown man. He's made well over 25 million bucks and is married to a Raider cheerleader. He has also had more chances than a cat have lives.

FINALLY...

Someone who had taken the time to watch the game. I have been saying that Alex is getting better. Everything is not his fault. Even my old man was against Alex, but then again he was drinking along with the entire stadium who are not paying attention to the game. So a day after my old man saw the game on tv he had a double take on Alex Smith, "he actually played good". Also everyone keeps saying Alex has 6 years in the league but he has yet to have 16 games, an entire season under his belt, and also no one to learn from. He has been learning on his own and going through alot of offensive coordinators. Alex has all the tools that he needs to be a qb but I think against the eagles after the verbal exchange with Coach he came back out and showed heart, I truly think that is what he has been missing is HEART. This Sunday Niners will go out and play and win PERIOD! Alex you now have HEART! I think I lost my point, anyhow everyone dont blame Alex for everything. I understand he is the qb and all points to him, but remember this is a team. I BELIEVE IN YOU ALEX SMITH! 0-5 does not mean a damn thing to me, its how Alex is progressing. LETS GO ALEX!!!
