Smith lacks an alpha dog instinct to dominate and mercilessly take down the opposition. It's not all about bravado, but an internal mindset. Joe Montana was quiet and unassuming, but he had a competitive fire and would take you apart. The big knock on Steve Young for a long time was that he didn't have that Montana killer instict. Ultimately, he got it done with a lot of support. I think intellectually Young is the closer comparrison to Smith. What is so damn frustrating about Smith is that he's a pretty damn good football player when his back is to the wall and his juices are flowing. But he only seems to get into that mindset when we're down three freakin' touchdowns and it's a hopeless cause. He flat out said so much in his press conference today. He has the self awareness. I think we need some more designed runs for him, in addition to more no huddle. He'll get more of an adrenaline rush and will quit thinking if he's running for his life, reacting and getting his uniform dirty. We should see more designed bootleg runs and QB draws. He's fast enough to make it productive and it will have the incidental benefit of getting his blood going and quiet his nerves.

He lacks the ability to read, think, and act quickly. Philly figured out our "spread" on that last drive. NFL blitzers are faster than college and they will be up on the QB fast.
choosing sides on this board has never seemed to be a good idea, but f it.
i'll still be wearing my smith jersey on sunday.
i've always supported him and will continue to do so.
last night was crazy watching on the tv. just hearing the boos after the smith fumble, and hearing the "we want carr" chants DURING plays, the 3 plays that followed that fumble that were all incomplete was crazy. crowd was laying it on him bad. i seriously thought it was the end for smith. made me a bit sad, haha.

He also arrived at the HOUSTON game last year. Then he arrived again in the NO game this year. It's just that everytime he arrives, he makes another departure...
Sing's philosophy is what is holding this team back....The game doesnt go through Gore....It goes through Alex Smith.....Gore fumbles twice and has a history of fumbling and yet no one is saying bring in ADixon....This team has the talent to play wide open and I wish they would just turn alex loose

Alex had 3 turnovers and is averaging almost that per game.

2 of the turnovers were forced by Dlinemen....so where is the blame on an ineffective oline....Smith takes the blame for everything....I think he will be better for going through this....it will toughen him.....no way we r better with Carr.....With Carr we would actually have to be able to run the ball and we just cant....If Snyder goes back into RG maybe.....

he's a smart dude, he should realize this. He mentioned it today in the press conference. Lets hope he's turned a corner. But I'm not holding my breath.

i'm not saying that this mirrors that incident 100%, but it can be something very much like it. i hope.
i found this read while looking for the footage. pretty cool. again, not calling smith the second coming of young. just thought it was eerily similar.
hmmmm...week 5. the eagles. yelling between coach and QB.
I thought of the same thing. I got caught up in the moment and thought "maybe this kid could pull it off" THEN...typical Alex Smith throws a pick to end the game. Singletary is the most stubborn person in the world if he can't see that the only way this kid could succeed is in shotgun/spread/2 minute offense. Smith's ship has sailed time to move on.
