Alex Smith #2 in the NFL in red zone efficiency (not kidding)

I think you might be reaching a bit too far on this one. Remember Alex only completed something like 55% of his red zone passes and if you look at scoring TD's through the air, the stat drops to around 25%...

srsly though, he's our best option with what we currently have on the active roster.

And now it's officially gone full circle and were back to my original point. Alex is #32 in points per attempt. So, this #2 in Red zone efficiency is an interesting stat that doesn't tell us much...

It tells us that Smith doesn't suck everywhere...? Maybe there is hope? Maybe a change at OC will make a difference?

I think that was why the OP started the thread anyway.

You know what, I think Danimal may be closer to the truth... He's playing so conservatively in the red zone that he doesn't give up the rock; but, also doesn't score many points. Maybe the new OC will force him to take more chances and we may possibly start walking away with 7 instead of 3...

I wish I can remember who I am quoting...I just heard this recently too.

About QB and taking chances.

Quote:
its not about QB's who never take chances vs QB's who always take chances......its about knowing when to take a chance, and when you do make the right decision that your team needs to gamble now....beat the odds by making the unlikely completion.

Alex Smith never really takes chances....and when he does, they rarely work out. So yeah, I am not at all surprised that he is efficient in the red zone. Too bad in 2 of 3 losses we were down by a lot and actually needed some heroism from QB, not conservatism...but that is well beyond his capabilities at this level

Smith threw 10 TDs in 11 games in the red zone last season. There were a total of 23 TDs in the red zone by the whole team through all 16 games. I'm not reaching at all. Our red zone offense last season was killer. We've really screwed ourselves in the red zone this season.

Either attribute it to the turnovers and mistakes or something else that we don't know about, but it doesn't appear to be Smith. He's still been efficient in the red zone.

If they only handed out points for that type of efficiency; but, I digress...

So, I guess what you're saying then is that we should have never gotten rid of J-Raye? Don't take it as a bad thing, cause I happen to agree with that. The problem on our team is a bit higher...

All I'm saying is that something has changed, but it doesn't appear to be Smith's efficiency in the red zone. We should be able to see if Raye needed firing over the next few weeks. It sure sounds like it from the players reaction interviews.

I'm not a big fan of Smith. I think he's proven that he's mediocre at best. I just think he's done a good job in the red zone.

True, he's done good; but he's been too safe to get us 7. That's why he has such a high passer rate in the red zone but such a bad TD to pass attempt ratio.

Anyways, it's been good chatting with ya. I gotta get some work done before I go home today. BTW, I see you're new-ish here. Welcome to the Zone!

This is one area where we can't completely blame Smith. We have fumbled balls in the red zone and that Saints DE made a great play tipping Alex's pass to Crabs.
When I saw that stat, it was hard to believe. Especially since he only has 2 TDs on the season.

I'm just going to say that the ranking systems leaves itself to numerous different interpretations.

Yeah Delanie and others. He hasn't always stalled us in the red zone (Alex).
Where's fly? I wanna read his ignorant Alex bashing posts
