Purpose: This thread will be updated at the conclusion of each week throughout the entire season. The purpose of this thread is to keep what is happening within the division in perspective. For example, after our Week 1 loss, many said the sky was falling. But what many also forget was that our competition is the Rams, Seahawks and Cardinals. Even if they lose Thursday, they still have a better than 50-50 chance of winning the division because of who St. Louis and Seattle have yet to play. By rights, each of those teams should lose at least two of their next three games (Seattle has got Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and ends with St. Louis - and could easily lose all three, and St Louis has KC, the Niners, and ends with the Seahawks - and ought to lose to TB and SF at least... and could lose to Seattle).

The Niners obviously have to beat the Rams and Arizona (their final game). But if they do, even if they lose to San Diego Thursday, they could easily end up in a three-way tie with St. Louis and Seattle with 7 and 9 records. And in that case, the tie breakers go to SF. They will have beaten the Rams twice, and will have a 5-1 inter-divisional record, while the best Seattle can do in that case is 4-2 inter-division.

Thursday's game against San Diego is big (we can put ourselves in the best position in the division with a win)... but the Dec 26th game against St. Louis is HUGE.

The best thing the team has going for it right now is the schedule.... and it doesn't hurt that they are playing better ball than a few weeks ago, while Seattle and St. Louis are starting to slip.

If I lived in Vegas, I'd take the odds and put my money on SF going to the playoffs.

how have the Rams started to slip up? They lost to the defending Super Bowl champs today? They've won 2 out of their last 3 (49ers have too) but they are a great home team, and have 2 straight home games down the stretch? And most likely are facing a team next week who might be missing their #1 QB.

KC is a running team with a nasty D, they can still be dangerous without Cassell

Wasn't Cassel a gametime decsion today? Im sure he will be back by next week. Also if I am not mistaken, didn't Big Ben have the same appendix rupture a couple years ago during preseason and wasn't out at all.

that's incorrect. Big Ben had the same operation in 2006 and was out 15 calendar days. If you apply that time frame to Cassel, he will come back week 16 and miss the Rams game.

True the Chiefs have a great run game, but did you see their score today? 0 points...

You gotta compare SD's D to St. L's D, SD can play with anybody. Their DB's will give Bradford a hard time.

good point, I hope you're right, and maybe Cassel will heal quick. I'm just expecting a Rams win, so if they lose I'll be real excited.

man i really want the rams and seahawks to lose next week. I really think the Seahawks are in trouble they really looked like s**t, like us in week 1 really. they go on a 9er like slide here and lose 3 of the next 4. it's the rams i'm worried about, they need to lose to the chiefs and to us the week after.

just to throw it out there.. Alex Smith is now the QB with the best QB rating in the NFC West..

1. SF A. Smith 80.6
2. STL S. Bradford 79.1
3. SEA M. Hasselbeck 75.2
4. AZ D. Anderson 65.9

other QB's that Smith is out performing..

NYJ M. Sanchez 74.2 - and has a better all around team and Oline
DET S. Hill 78.6 - Has a talent in CJ and Pettigrew
CIN C. Palmer 78.1 - veteran QB throwing to a talented group
WAS D. McNabb 77.1 - new offense but should be putting up better numbers
MIA C. Henne 76.5 - MIA is a solid team and Henne is up and down
MIN B. Favre 69.6 - Down year, probably his final

I've heard radio talk show hosts on both Fox Sports and ESPN radio, and ESPN TV throughout this past week dismiss the Niners as being not yet statistically eliminated, but in real terms, not having a chance. They'd get around to discussing the Western Division, talk about the Rams for ten minutes, and maybe Seattle a little, and usually not even mention the Niners. If they did mention them, it was typically one line to the effect of them already being toast.

After today, a few announcers came back and said it looks like the Niners are still in the hunt, but almost nobody was saying that yesterday. It's hard to look at a 5 - 8 team with three games left to play and think they are still in i (and even harder to think so when they were 4 - 8 and two games behind two different teams).... But if you look at it from the perspective of how bad everybody in this division actually is... and how tuff their remaining respective schedules are.... it's legitimate to say it's a toss-up between the Niners and the Rams right now, and a win Thursday will almost lock it for the Niners.

Another way of looking at this is that SF has to win two of their last three, while St.L loses two of their last three.

Since one of those games is against each other, if SF wins that particular game, SF only has to win one of its remaining two games while St.L has to win both of its remaining 2 games (because a tied seasonal record goes to SF based on the first tie breaker - record against each other).

If SF loses to St.L but wins its other two, St.L still has to win two of its last three, because otherwise it would have the same 7 - 9 record as SF, and the first tie breaker would be a wash with each team having beaten the other one once, but St.L would still lose at that point lose on the second tie breaker with a 3 -3 interdivisional record to SF's 4-2.

In short, as long as SF wins two of its last three, St.L loses on tie breakers unless it does so as well, and if SF should run the table, St.L would have to do so also, or they are out.

Obomanu and Williams were game time decisions today. So its a reasonable expectation to think that they will play next week. Martin did not break his leg. Butler did. He is staying in San Francisco for surgery. Season over for him. Hawks are not out of the mix yet. Its still a three horse race.
