Purpose: This thread will be updated at the conclusion of each week throughout the entire season. The purpose of this thread is to keep what is happening within the division in perspective. For example, after our Week 1 loss, many said the sky was falling. But what many also forget was that our competition is the Rams, Seahawks and Cardinals. This thread will track division standings, upcoming schedules, and all major NFC West related news. If we win in SD, we control our destiny. But if we lose in SD, we would need the Rams to lose some games (other than the one to us of course).

The Niners have been written off by.... well.... everyone... but the fact is, if they win Thursday against San Diego (and they REALLY,REALLY should not), they will be odds-on favorites to win the division.

Even if they lose Thursday, they still have a better than 50-50 chance of winning the division because of who St. Louis and Seattle have yet to play. By rights, each of those teams should lose at least two of their next three games (Seattle has got Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and ends with St. Louis - and could easily lose all three, and St Louis has KC, the Niners, and ends with the Seahawks - and ought to lose to TB and SF at least... and could lose to Seattle).

The Niners obviously have to beat the Rams and Arizona (their final game). But if they do, even if they lose to San Diego Thursday, they could easily end up in a three-way tie with St. Louis and Seattle with 7 and 9 records. And in that case, the tie breakers go to SF. They will have beaten the Rams twice, and will have a 5-1 inter-divisional record, while the best Seattle can do in that case is 4-2 inter-division.

Thursday's game against San Diego is big (we can put ourselves in the best position in the division with a win)... but the Dec 26th game against St. Louis is HUGE.

Wasn't Cassel a gametime decsion today? Im sure he will be back by next week. Also if I am not mistaken, didn't Big Ben have the same appendix rupture a couple years ago during preseason and wasn't out at all.

that's incorrect. Big Ben had the same operation in 2006 and was out 15 calendar days. If you apply that time frame to Cassel, he will come back week 16 and miss the Rams game.

True the Chiefs have a great run game, but did you see their score today? 0 points...

Thursday's game against San Diego is big (we can put ourselves in the best position in the division with a win)... but the Dec 26th game against St. Louis is HUGE.

The best thing the team has going for it right now is the schedule.... and it doesn't hurt that they are playing better ball than a few weeks ago, while Seattle and St. Louis are starting to slip.

If I lived in Vegas, I'd take the odds and put my money on SF going to the playoffs.

how have the Rams started to slip up? They lost to the defending Super Bowl champs today? They've won 2 out of their last 3 (49ers have too) but they are a great home team, and have 2 straight home games down the stretch? And most likely are facing a team next week who might be missing their #1 QB.

Wasn't Cassel a gametime decsion today? Im sure he will be back by next week. Also if I am not mistaken, didn't Big Ben have the same appendix rupture a couple years ago during preseason and wasn't out at all.

that's incorrect. Big Ben had the same operation in 2006 and was out 15 calendar days. If you apply that time frame to Cassel, he will come back week 16 and miss the Rams game.

You gotta compare SD's D to St. L's D, SD can play with anybody. Their DB's will give Bradford a hard time.
