Be careful of what you wish for. If Smith fails and is benched, we can look forward to Carr or Davis for the rest of the year. They are not better. Then if we draft a QB next year, remember that many highly rated QBs simply do not pan out, (should I list them?) and it takes a while to make that determination. As for free agent QBs, do you think any good QB will be allowed by his team to go elsewhere?
Summary: Smith has to make it for us. He has done pretty well in the recent past with questionable support. If the support improves in all phases, he should (pray) improve. Yesterday was a bad day all around for our team. They just fell apart - and that applies to all phases of the game.
By the way, what did Frank's stats look like? Was it him failing or was it other factors as well? For now, Smith does not lose the locker room because there were few players who felt that they performed well themselves.

At this point I don't think a whole lot of guys have his back. We already saw Vernon b***h him out in PS and nobody stuck up for Crabs.

Exactly. Several other guys are in danger of "losing the locker room" too, and others just played badly as a one-time thing, hopefully. Not many of them played well (maybe Vernon) and not many of them are in a place to criticize Smith or anyone else. Even Jake Delomme can't lose 31-6 all by himself.

SIX years, ONE 300+ yard passing game...by this time you are what you are and everyone on the team knows it.

Smith sucked no doubt. But if we are going to bash can we stop parroting dumb sht like "6 yrz dood!" Smith has started in 40-43 games (can't remember exactly). That's less than 3 seasons.
When is "half the zone" going to understand dood?

You really think Alex Smith has this "potential talent" that has yet to be seen after starting "40-43" games?
Maybe the other half of the zone should start opening their eyes.

Ok, so maybe it is 40-43 games...is that not enough?

I've seen enough "good" from last year to conclude Alex will be a solid QB for this team.
But after yesterday I'm not able to conclude that with any confidence. I've always been on the fence with him. I always thought he was a 3rd round QB at best. But whatever it's done.
Anyway my point was that he hasn't played 6 years. It just makes people sound foolish and exaggerates their overall point. Obviously if Alex had started 6 years worth of games and we were still in this position no one would have his back.
I highly doubt we would be in this predicament if Smith played all 6 years with the same OC and a competent overall staff/supporting cast. Do you? Anyway probably a whole other thread.
All I know is this fvcking sucks. I can't even believe we are all having this discussion after game 1 in 2010. I thought these were discussions of the past for our Niners. Ugh. When will this team get it together? Tired of saying "next year."
