Discouraged we cut Paymah and Maragos. I mean, if we are going to keep 11 DB's, why not 13, or 18, or 25.
Robinson was the biggest surprise of the cuts. But Singletary said his lack of versatility was the reason the club decided to go in a different direction.
"It came down to a decision based on productivity," Singletary said. "How much does he actually play on offensive side of the ball? We could not fit him in on offensive side of the ball."
Since Sing is talking about productivity, and we have 84 DB's on the roster, I guess this means we are going to play in many different defensive sets this season, including ....the 2-3-6 defense, the 2-2-7 defense, and the 1-2-8 defense.
Cutting a Pro-Bowl alternate at special teams for 4 DB's who will NEVER see the field. Very, very odd.
P.S. Looking forward to the Sunday de-activated list of 8 DB's.
Cheers.
Thinking could be to keep a guy like Brock around for a few days and let teams establish their rosters/practice squads. Then pick up a veteran ILB from the trash heap, release Brock and put him on the PS (might be a little easier to sneak him through at that point).
i don't think that Brock needs to be snuck. I mean, he's an UDFA who didn't play that much or necessarily light it up in the preseason. He played well, but its not like he was so good that the team can't afford to lose him. IDK, MadDog is right that its strange to keep so many DB's, so few ILB's, and to ditch your ST captain...I do think Brock will be the first one released if there is someone else on the wire that we want, and I think he'll clear and end up on the PS.
You could be right...but he was obviously impressive enough in camp to keep the guy around in favor of some name veterans. Not saying he lives on Revis Island or anything, but they clearly like him.
true, but when the dust settles I still think he'll be on our PS. If not, I can't imagine he suits up on most gamedays. IDK, the numbers on D don't make a lot of sense right now. I am glad that we have legit depth at S, and CB has been an issue for a long time, really, so it doesn't bother me to try and shore that up for the longhaul (considering Nate is probably gone after this year), but we're going to need a 4th ILB at some point...I like the fact that they kept the players that they thought were the best, with a mix of vets and young guys...
Nothing against Brock, but I still kinda feel like I would have rather they kept a guy who had a better chance of staying on the team this year, and then, if someone else became available that they felt they HAD to have, they could make the tough decision then.
