Down at 49ers HQ to prepare for a column I’m writing over the weekend, but watched a very lively morning practice, including Mike Singletary doing some major barking during a LBs coverage drill.

That amped up the energy-level, no doubt, and then Frank Gore started barking that he wanted Patrick Willis to cover him, and Willis was more than willing to make that happen.

Lots of whooping and talking–all fairly good-natured, of course–and lots of energy.

Always good to see the top guys demanding to go against each other, and everybody else watching it happen.

Generally, Gore seemed to get the best of it, but Willis later told me he’s determined to sharpen his pass-defense and this is the best way to do it.

Good competition. But all i know is somebody on this defense better figure out how to stop screen passes. They can't continue to let screen passes and dump off kill them like last year.

Willis isn't expected to have supreme coverage skills and Gore is one of the best route-running and pass-catching RBs in the league, so I'd expect Frank to take the majority of this battle.

I'd like to see Frank Vs. Willis in a blitz pickup drill. That's when the world explodes.
