Fly, do you not like Alex Smith??

Chico, to be honest with u'all I like Alex, I just dont like the way he plays. I understand he's the starter for 2010, I just lost faith on him. I was very excited when he got another chance during the Texan game last year, but I think he failed again, and if he fails, we all fail.

What made you think he failed again? He had a good season last year despite only playing in 10 games or so. Where do you see the failure?

I don't think he had a good or bad season-at least not Jamarcus like-haha, more like a yoyo season. that is what fustrates people.

True, but don't forget statistically it was the best season he's ever had.

If in year 5 a #1 overall draft pick has their best season EVER at 81.5 passer rating and people are excited about it, then we're either on crack or extremely overzealous.

We're not on crack or overzealous. We're excited and confident with the continuity that's in place for him to have an even a better season.

I'm very hopeful. If he produces a CONSISTENT 85 passer rating (not 50's against good teams and 100's against bad teams), then I'll be happy.

Don't forget a higher if not consistent completion percentage, and a positive TD:INT ratio.

I'm trying to keep it simple.... achieveable and good, not great. I don't want to set lofty goals, only to get dissapointed. If he can just average a very consistent 85 rating, I'll be happy.

I see. Just don't forget that those statistics are what make up a QB rating.

Just put it this way, hope we can get to playoffs. No more excuses... I hope anyways...

Again, based off of last season, what made you think he failed?

No playoffs...

By that logic you must have lost faith in the team in general, since they didn't win either.

C'mon, Memphis... it's far easier to place all of the blame on 1 player. You know better than that.

What I would want to see from Alex is whether or not he single handedly wins games for us. Good quarterbacks don't win every game by themselves, but they win a couple, and a handful of extra wins a season separate "solid" teams from playoff teams.
Great quarterbacks are what separate playoff teams, from Super Bowl teams.

Im lost

I would give Alex Smith an extension if he proves that he can win games for us. That is the point.

In other words, if our team goes to the playoffs, that does not necessarily mean the quarterback position played exceptionally well, therefore it does not warrant a big contract for Alex Smith.
Regardless of what the team does, Alex Smith's theoretical contract extension should be based upon how many games he can win for us with his own individual effort.

For example, The Ravens did not keep Trent Dilfer on their team for very long, in spite of the fact that they had won a Super Bowl with him at quarterback. Why did they not want to keep a "Super Bowl winning quarterback" on their team? Because Trent Dilfer was not a very good quarterback.
An extension will depend on 2 things.
1. how far id he take us into the playoffs. The only thing that should stop this tem from winning will be this team.
2. is the a better FA out there for us to grab?

A QB is ALSO considered a LEADER. good QB's like Peyton Manning are what get teams like the Colts to the playoffs. QB's that have control of the offense, to make the necessary adjustments or audibles. Even play calls. We have a great TEAM, that is currently relying ON the QB to get them to the playoffs. All the pieces are in place, it now falls on Alex Smith. The guy who's position it is to DELIVER the ball to his teammates accurately and efficiently. The guy who's job is to march the TEAM down the field, keeping our defense off giving them a rest. The guy who's job is on the line IF he does NOT get this team to the playoffs this season.

Like I said a QB can't do everything. The other players have to do their part as well. This means that the O-Line must block, The receivers must catch and the defense must stop the opposing offenses.

Like I said a QB can't do everything. The other players have to do their part as well. This means that the O-Line must block, The receivers must catch and the defense must stop the opposing offenses.

The QB must also be able to throw the ball accurately in order for the receivers to have a fair chance at catching. The QB must also be able to hand the ball off securely. The QB must also be able to read the defense and make the right adjustments, whether it be calling an audible, adjusting receiver routes, or changing up protection. Most importantly, a QB must also be able to protect the football and not turn it over.

Of course everything you said is right. Because it's obvious... Whether you like it or not, this season falls on Alex Smith. if he plays at least, or just DECENT, this team will make the post season. No question. If he plays like "same 'ol Alex", then we won't. Know why? Because if you put a QB like Aaron Rogers, or Drew Brees, or Peyton Manning in as the 49ers QB, no question the 49ers are an elite playoff team. But with Alex Smith, they're not. I am an Alex Smith believer. Before that Texan's game, I called Alex an interception machine. Thought he was garbage. But ever since that game I've become a true believe in him now.

Inevitably, he just has to play well. You'll read it anywhere. You'll read the same thing. This time around, it all falls on the QB this season for the 49ers. It's make or break this season for Alex.
