Is Baas permanent answer at center?

The coaches love Heitmann, though. It would take alot for Baas to unseat him. At least this year.

i was mostly being a smartass about the "respect" thing.

i don't think his time is up at all. he's a solid, experienced starter, and as long as he's healthy the job is his. i haven't seen anything from Baas to indicate that he's an improvement. That's not to say that Heitman is irreplaceable, but I don't think we have better options

How about the injuries to Heitmann? He had a broken leg a couple years back, if I recall correctly... now this. I wonder how long before management begins seeking out a new starter with concerns over Heitmann's recovery effectiveness. Heitmann's okay by me, but how cool would it be to get more punch from the center position? Eh, however it plays out with the two of them, I'm sure I'll be content enough for the time being.

It was only the first week of pre-season, but even in that game last Sunday Baas looked like a way better center in a single pre-season game than Heitmann did all last pre-season (and amidst some of the regular season games).

We'll just have to see.

2005: David Baas was supposed replace Newberry at center, but he got 5 starts at RG when Heitmann replaced Newberry.

2006: We signed Larry Allen at LG, Smiley started at RG, and Snyder was the key backup at LG and LT. Wragge was the backup at LG and C. Baas started 0 games.

2007: Baas was forced into action at RG when Smiley went down with a shoulder injury (placed on IR). Baas played 8 games.

2008: Baas started 9 games with Snyder seeing some time at LG as well. Inconsistent performance from Baas, as well as the rest of the offensive line. Rachal was drafted in the 2008 draft to replace Smiley, and Baas was starter by default due to the need at RT for Snyder.

2009: Baas played all 16 games. Again, this may have been due to lack of competition and depth at the OG position, along with Singletary wanting to throw the young OLers into the fire. This is the first time Baas remained healthy in a season.

Analysis for 2011 Free Agency class:

Watch the first highlight of this Gore youtube clip (I'd recommend muting it as I think the music is awful). You'll see Heitmann get absolutely destroyed and shoved directly back into Gore. That happens to Heitmann way too often, and when Baas was in there, I didn't see it happen a single time.

He's most definitely the permanent center... for now.

Temporarily, that is.

Let's see how he does against the Williams wall before we try to answer this question. If he dominates (which I doubt)and continues to do so then it will be hard to bench him in 5 weeks. If he holds his own and continues to do so then I'm sure there will be an open competition when Hietman comes back. If he stinks up the joint Heitmen will probably be the starter as soon as he is healthy.

the team is asking the same question. with Heitmann out we're going to see what Baas is made of. I always hated that Baas was playing LG when he played C and RG in college. C is his best position IMO (was in college at least) we will need to re-visit this after a few regular season games. I really hope he is the answer would be nice to find someone in house that's young and knows the system to take over for Heitmann.
