Your intentions are noble and just here, Kilgore... but you have to know how futile your OP is. Many fans are the way they are... and it's not gonna change. They are often ignorant, and often express the knee-jerk reactionary slop we have been reading for years. Why? There are many reasons:
1. Some people simply enjoy being overly critical and negative. Perhaps they received a ton of it in their sorry lives, and on a MB, they can exact revenge by dishing it out to players and members without any worries of consequence.
2. Some have dug themselves in so deep to their stance on a particular player, coach, etc. that they would rather slash their artery than to accept that they just might be wrong about their long-standing opinion.
3. Some are very lonely, and seek out attention. Maybe they can't get much attention in their daily lives. So what topic and stance will best get people to respond to them? Yep... you got it.
4. Some people just fish for reaction. They love to stir the pot, and feel good about themselves for evoking the carnage that follows.
5. Some people are decent fans, but rather cowardly of heart. They have been let down and sometimes crushed in the past by a player's or teams' deficiencies... so they simply refuse to open themselves up to positive thinking anymore. They would rather expect negative results, so that they can protect themselves and their fragile emotional state.
6. Some people think that they need to convince an entire group of people that their opinion is the right one... the only one. So they repeat the same negatives again and again to seek out approval... as this approval can help them reinforce their original opinion.
There are a lot of fans who are convinced that Smith will fail. There are some that are convinced he will excel. Many of us (like myself) accept either as possible... and don't feel a need to excessively bash or praise.
Good stuff though, K.T. and good to see you around, as you are one of the better posters I have read from.
