Yes, that would be troubling if he shows only glimmers but ultimately doesn't make a convincing case for himself. We could argue that it could or could not happen, but no one really knows for certain. What we all can probably agree on is that he has never been set up better for success... so I think we will definitively know by season's end. Singletary and Co. have shown that they don't simply look at QB rating to make their determinations. That said, it will likely be clear whether his failures this season (should he fail) are that of his own poor play or the efficiency around him (whether that be OL suckage, playcalling suckage, etc).

Yeah, but he needs 3 years under the same system to really get it, the 2nd year was just to feeling of continuity, besides the 49ers FO hurt Smith's confidence by bringing Carr into the mix.

I agree 100%. I hope like hell Alex lights it up and earns another multimillion $$$ contract; but, I fear he's going to only play just well enough for management and some fans to want to bring him back.

I think we have a solid team and are only a QB away from being Dominant in the division. If Alex improves and becomes the QB we wanted to draft in the first round so many years ago, then Awesome. If he's only borderline/average then we need to upgrade the position next year...

I agree with everything you said. When I see Alex Smith, I think of Bill Walsh's quote regarding Steve DeBerg: "he's just good enough to get you beat". The problem is, Smith will show some flashes of really good play, normally against bad teams or against teams that have nothing to lose at the end of the year, and then these unrepresentative examples are used as evidence of his potential, and we just keep getting strung along. What we need from him are a bit more yards per pass, a bit higher completion rate, a 2:1 ratio of TD's to INT's (he had this last year I believe) and CONSISTENCY. He had a decent (not great) passer rating in 2009, but, as usual, it was comprised of wild fluctuations throughout the year. That's just not going to cut it anymore. I just hope the decision isn't made based on flashes of potential. He either shows consistently solid results or he doesn't.

Reality is that it's hard not to after the rookie season that Alex had; but, I do think he regressed from 06 to 07 (prior to the injury) and could not win the starting job in either 08 or 09...
I'm speaking of full seasons here. But I'm sure you knew that.

One of the few times MM is full of Shat. Heitmann has ALWAYS called protection at the Line. If not then why the truck is he always pointing and putting himself in a False Start situation if Alex is the one calling the scheme? I'll tell you why. It's cause Heitmann is making those calls.

Maiocco also wrote that Smith was going to start calling more of his own protection assignments. Further proving my case that Maiocco is FoS if he stated that Smith blundered his own assignments. Beerows too wrote this and So did Cohn and so on and so forth. Has Alex called his own schemes? Probably. But it's a whole lot less than what you make it out to be using Maiocco's misinformation. I like the guy but he's wrong here.

I don't care about the Future IFs', I care about current events. We finally have an OC that's competent and will be here into at least the next season. After that we'll have to see where it goes.

Now see D, if you want to play that card I can play the only 10 games card. His stats might even have been better if he'd been able to start from the 1st snap taken of the season. Duke would definitely have gotten a couple more TDs' out of it also. Don't forget out of the first 5 and a half games Hill threw 3 TDs' to the guy. Alex matched that in a HALF of play.

It's a reasonable argument D. If the Receivers caught 5 more passes a game(catchable passes mind you) this wouldn't even be a topic of discussion.

Instead they didn't and it still is.

Which leads me back to? Oh that's right Receivers not dropping catchable passes. If they're off target and not catchable fine, I can let that slide. I have reasonable expectations though. However, if the ball was within the Receivers bubble and he muffs it then I'ma call 'im on it. I played that position. Anything in my bubble was MY responsibility. I drop it, I'm taking the ass chewing for it. Not my QB. Period. You never saw GOAT blame his QBs'. So why are we so quick to blame Smith? If the pass is on Smith, then I'll call it that way. Just like I called it on Hill for his flutter pass. I'm smalle,r weigh less and have better technique than that guy and can certainly throw it farther.

I'm not here to convert. I could give a flying truck if you believe as I believe. What I do care about is that you talk out your asses about Smith like a QB is not supposed to have any issues ever.

This may sound sacrilegious but even Joe and Steve had their bad years. Would you feel the same way you do if they never got us to the Super Bowl ever? I doubt you would.

~Ceadder

Yet Joe and Steve also had good years, pro-bowl years. This is something that Alex has still failed to provide....

Joe and Steve also had Solid protection up front pretty much every year they played for this team. They also had a lot of Blue chip talent around them. At least enough for them to make look good and to look good because of them.

Name the Bluechippers that Smith has had around him and in front of him. On the OLine it's been Staley annnnnndddd ...

Gore hasn't gotten much more than a thousand ground yards a season behind those Lines other than '06. He's been constantly submarined at the LoS.

Duke is FINALLY coming into his own.

Tree is one of the better Receivers Smith has had the fortune to Pass to.

Battle was his most reliable option in the 3 full years he's been able to be on the field.

Should I start naming all the guys that Joe and Steve have had? Hell I'll name just one.

JJ Stokes. Times got SO FRIGGIN BAD, I would have cut my Right nut off to have the guy back on the team. Now THAT my friend is when you KNOW the talent level of the Offense is in the crapper.

Instead we've had a BUNCH of scrubs cycle in and out of our locker room and a WR coach that rides the coat tails of his ONE productive unit. As far as I'm concerned they were productive in spite of Sully not because of him.

This is all I'm saying, that Smith could be better but it's hard to be when you have all this working against you.

Don't even get me started on the other coachin elements that he's had stabbing him as if he were Julius Caesar. To me Nolan was Brutus.

I never ever ever ever ever want to see this happen to another of our QBs' the rest of my life once we get back to a better onfield product. More than any one man should have to endure imho.

~Ceadder

Wow. Just Wow...

You need some serious help with your analytical and logic skills...

First off, Smith has only played 1 full season so how the hell can you say you're only comparing full seasons?

Next, you seriously expect people to take your word over that of a paid NFL analysis and writer? Get real...

Then you're trying to bring in the Ifs and Buts game with Smith's stats (his stats are what they are, get over it already)...

Then you take a ride down the slippery slope of HOF QB's having bad games and try to draw a correlation to Smith and insinuate that this is hope for him to have Success...

Let me ask you, did you eat paint chips as a kid or live under power-lines or something?

I ate urmutha as a kid. Only had to give it up cause it got old and stale.

~Ceadder

Really? A momma joke? What is this, 1993 all over again?

It isn't 1993?

Coulda swore by your reference to paint chips that it was. I think my Alzheimers is acting up. Better see the Doc for a refill on my scrip.

But I also think there are about 4 or 5 members in this thread that seriously need a hug.

It is what is. F*&K fearing the guy will only do well enough to appease fans. If you fear that then go away. We can fill your spot with other fans. Just like everyone on the team is replaceable so are you. Generally speaking of course.

I think that too much emphasis has been put on the QB position. Other positions of need were and have been greater for a LONG time. If you think that Rattay should have been given a chance(I am one of these people so don't ) then right NOW is where you put your money where your mouth is as a fan. Smith is in almost the exact same position only now we have targets for him to throw the ball to. Rattay didn't have that either.

And people people people. Let's not get wrapped up in Smith's 1st season. He was a Rookie thrown into an unreasonable situation. The man had to Start after our 1st two QBs' on the depth chart were nuked. Or had you forgotten this?

The people 'in out they ass about his first year have no business even talkin football imho. A 1st year player picking up the WCO is impossible. Joe never did it. Steve never did it. Jeff sucked in his first year as a WCO QB. Or don't you all remember whining about how much he sucked and booed the man onto the Bench?

It's not unreasonable to expect greatness for this team. Only unreasonable when you completely disregard the history of the players that came before the ones that play on the field now.

This is what I have a problem with. Everyone acts like Joe and Steve instantly became great players when they first donned the Red and Gold togs. It's this type of fan that pisses me off more than anything. I guess nobody remembers when Joe got benched. Or Steve for that matter. Every QB has some kind of issue.

And enough is enough with the DeBerg comments. I never ONCE heard or read a quote where Coach Walsh was openly critical of SMITH. F&^K the DeBerg statement. Two completely DIFFERENT eras and two completely different QBs' and once again we're squarely back to the WCO. DeBerg couldn't play in the WCO. Which prompted that statement. Smith hasn't seen the WCO since his rookie year. Rodgers sure as I'm sitting here right now, didn't even get any playing time until what his 3rd year where he got to soak it all in and pick the brain of a consummate WCO professional?

My personal take is this. If he plays well enough to own the job you should be happy. If he plays poorly enough to be replaced you should be happy. If he plays only well enough to be considered then you should be happy.

1st reason is obvious. Smith owned the position and that's what many of us want.
3rd reason is obvious. Smith played to your expectations and now will be gone. You'll be able to pound your chests and say "see, tole you"

It's the second reason that is not so obvious. Which is this... It will force management to take a hardline stance and bring other QBs' in to see if they are our future. It all depends on who will be available at the end of the season as to whether or not Smith is brought back for another go round. But at least they'll HAVE to do something.

Now get off your damn violins, I'm getting a friggin migraine from all the damn whining going on.

Peace.

Brett Favre "the consummate WCO professional" completed 64.1% of his passes, threw for 3227 yards and 18 tds, in only 13 games his 2nd yr in the league and 1st in the WCO. In doing so, he led his team to an 8-5 regard.

But that's what happens when you have talent. And I mean innate talent, not the talent of his teammates.

So, how did the stud named Favre do when it came to "clutch" time? .... ooops...

Tracy Porter and the Saints say, sincerely... HAHA, FU !!!!

(how's that for talent?)

Favre wasn't thrown into the fire. He sat on the bench for one year in Atlanta. Same system or not, he had time to learn about playing in the NFL. Also, it was not like Favre didn't have weapons at his disposal in his first year of starting in GB: the All-Pro Sterling Sharpe for example. He also had the luck of having Holmgren as the coach, the guy who had had plenty of experiences molding QBs. Favre had a rough third year, throwing a lot of interceptions.

Peace.

If he lights it up like he should have many million dollars ago, then we should absolutely sign him up. He's still young. If he teases us with inconsistent performances again, getting a low to mid 80's passer rating that's comprised of eggs on the field against good teams and high ratings against the worst teams in the league, we ought to let him go play for the Bills.

Completely agree with the bolded.

Same.

Nope not mad just stating some truths that people aren't willing to accept.

That pic is disturbing however.
