Mays Off The Edge?

They will probably have some blitz packages for Mays. The kid is a freak...just needs to get in the books and learn to read offenses, so he can react quickly to compensate for his lack lateral mobility.

Not to say that Mays will be great, but the Rumph comparison is a bad one.

Rumph was drafted as a big CB and was only moved to safety when he proved he couldn't play corner. He was never a big hitter either and that ONE hit on TO was about the only big hit I ever saw him deliver.

Mays is bigger, stronger, and faster than Rumph. Rumph isn't half the pure athlete Mays is, but that doesn't mean Mays will be a good football player.

The Goldson - Mays combo has the potential to be something special

Marvin, Rumph was a hitter, which was why he was moved to FS and he was very effective in blitzing. He wasn't as big as Mays, but he was 203 pounds and he wasn't THAT slow considering he came into the league as a CB and started in the NFL as a CB. As a CB one year, he had 62 tackles, which isn't bad.

Mike "Flatfoot" Rumph! He was a physical player who tried hard but couldn't stay healthy and didn't have the talent. That basically summed up most players during the Mooch & Erickson years.

Mays will fit in fine with this defense. Can't wait to see how Manusky uses him on the safety blitz!

That would have been Spence all day even with Mays on the field. That was a Corner Blitz not a Safety Blitz. In the Corner Blitz the Receiver that Spence leaves free is covered in Zone or covered in Man by the FS allowing the SS to play Centerfield, which is where Mays would be.

But I'm thinking that if Lewis goes down or doesn't stick with the team that Goldson should be SS and that allows Mays to have a bit more room on the field to freelance and not be as responsible for coverage. Which was why I really liked Mays as the 2nd round selection.

You got Bam Bam, TKO, Goldson and Mays roaming the middle of the field, not many Receivers will want to catch a ball there. That is no man's land on the field.

I know his history, his FS expirement only lasted about a half of a season!

So did Mays even see field today?

Is it me or do all the beat writers seem to be reporting the exact same thing? It's like they are all working off the same transcript. I thought they went to a live practice?

My point wasn't to argue the merits of Mike Rumph. I was just trying to say that Mike Rumph and Taylor Mays are entirely different players.

Rumph was MUCH better in pass coverage (and thats why he was taken in the first round as a CB) while Mays is purely a safety.

Rumph wasn't slow, but he wasn't Taylor Mays fast. Mays is just a freak of nature. As I said before tho, that doesn't guarantee he'll be a good football player.

When I look at Taylor Mays, I hope he can realize his HUGE potential. If I want to look for a comparison of what I fear he may become, Mike Rumph is a bad example. I think a much better example of a Big, Fast Safety who couldn't cover is Dana Hall.

Hopefully, he just becomes another in a LONG line of USC safeties to succeed...Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, Tim McDonald, Mark Carrier, Troy Polamalu.

What? As an OLB? No, I don't think that would work. Playing safety, he could blitz off the corner. That would be cool.
