well, at this point, Mays has less cover skills than Roman. But then again, thats what Goldson is for.

Mays can cover a lot of ground with that speed of his so I'd like to see him worked into coverage.

Always played hard just doesn't have the physical gifts and isn't a play-maker. Very technically sound and a hard-worker, I wish him the best but I'm glad he won't be on the field for us anymore.

But how can you NOT paraphrase the Great Mark Roman without including some sort of metaphor to the word or instance of being raped or sexually-offended?

I never quite understand people's hatred toward Roman. I mean, he cost the team....nothing...... but a small salary in money. No draft choices, no players in a trade. Nothing. He was a free agent who happened to want to come to this team, played hard, and gave his best. Most free agent pickups are LONG, LONG gone, let alone starting for this team for a number of years, and being willing to play a backup role this last season.

In other words, why would people spend so much time trying to make Roman a villain. If there is a villain, then fans should look at management, who obviously was not able to find a player to beat him out. Why not make Reggie Smith the bad guy? Or, Marcus Hudson, who was a hybrid CB/S. Or Vickiel Vaughn? Or Darnell Bing? Or....you fill in the blank with safeties who came to this team and did nothing. Roman came here and was a starter for years.

It is very sloppy analysis, and flat out ugly bias, that makes individuals target specific players as "vile", "detestable", or "a person to ridicule". So, Mark Roman wasn't a star. Duh? He came to the team with virtually no other team interested in the free agent market, on a low-budget expense. Were we expecting this guy to be a stud?

This pathetic attempt to slander a player late in their career is the same ugly road this board has taken with other 49ers who played their ass off for years, never complained, and tried to help their team win: Cue the tape to Derek Smith, Arnaz Battle, and others.

So, why don't we actually thank him for his effort over the years, and pretend for once that he wasn't on our team to sabotage our team's chances to win on Sundays.

Very good points MadDog. I for one was always a Derek Smith and Arnaz Battle "homer". I wasn't really saddened to see either one go though because I knew we had better talent on the roster at this point. But what you say is very valid. Our management hasn't been very good until as of late this past decade...
