At guard, but he's a darn good center. I hope we keep him around.

Heitman is better

Another option that I did not think of was posted in the Who plays RG thread by NinerGM:

"Hmnnn....

Unless Davis has an OUSTANDING camp, he won't beat out Staley at LOT. I think what might be more of a possibility, or at least when camp starts out as:

Sims (training Davis) - Baas/Rachal - Heitman - Iupati - Staley

A rookie OLT starting in the NFL would be extremely risky. Davis may need to sit a season before getting to the field - again unless he has an OUTSTANDING camp."

I think that this is a very viable option: Sims-Iupoti-Heitman-Rachal-Staley
Staley-Baas-Wragge-Wragge-Davis
Davis- Wragge-Baas-Baas-Boone

I think that I like this a lot: Sims-Iupoti-Heitman-Rachal-Staley!!!

Sims is a good back up(not a starter)...we didn't draft Davis to sit on the bench...we need him to start at RT at some point this season.....period

Staley will be the left tackle for at least this year. Depending on how Davis Plays they could switch positions 2 years from now

Make no mistakes the Niners drafted Iupati and Davis to start this year. Sure they are saying the right things now saying its a competition and blah blah blah but i fully expect the starting line to be

Staley-Iupati-Heitman-Rachal-Davis
Naw Baas needs to be on the bench

He hasn't played center for five years or more now. How can you say he is a darn good center?

Plus Sing has already said that iupati will be competing with Baas and Davis with Snyder

Staley, Heitman and Rachal are in their spots.

Line will be Staley-Iupati-Heitman-Rachal-Davis

It doesn't mean Bass and Heitman won't be in competition.

how do you reason that?
If Baas has a good training camp and gives Iupati a battle, then he'll be the backup guard/center for this season and possibly beyond. He would be on the game day roster as the first one off the bench if either guy goes down.

If it happened, it would mean Cody Wallace is probably done for.

there is a pattern I see with Niner fans alot.

Obviously, that was a horrible decade. We had a lot of horrible teams and a lot of terrible units for many years. When, there is a terrible unit, and in that unit...1 guy is OK......many Niner fans let themselves believe he is actually pretty darn good.

You saw it with Arnaz Battler, Derrick Smith and yes...Eric Heitmann.

Eric Heitmann is nowhere near the Center that Niner fans think he is.

Why not take a gamble on Baas....if it works out....we have our starting 5 for the next 5 years. Give me another lineup that could lead to a 5 year run of stability?

Heitmann is a connection with the worst decade in Niner history. Let it go.

The Future is....

LT Staley LG Iuapati C Baas RG Rachal RT Davis
6th Man Snyder

Beware...MadDog is watching!

Leave Baas to compete at LG and Heitmann at center. Heitmann is not the most physical guy but he is very smart and makes the right line calls.
