He's young and has potential, that is what the 49ers see(especially Manusky)and that is why he's on the roster and that is what matters, period.

Agree.

I am convinced that if he gets cut, some other team will pick him up (cheap), and he will become a solid NFL starter.
I never liked this pic. Never will. He doesn't do anything lol. It sucks. I don't even remember who else was there to get?

Yep I agree should've been Desean Jackson that was a no brainer!! or if we were on the defensive tip then why the f**k not Kenny Phillips at Safety? We never draft Miami players never (Gore okay) but never in round 1. Dude was a hawk in college or CB from VT Brandon Flowers. That's where scot fkd up!! I know the knock on flowers was his speed but fk speed he has football IQ!!

Aside from QB, DT is the most difficult transition from college to the NFL. For example, has anybody heard from Glenn Dorsey since he was drafted... Didnt think so.

He definitely possesses the physical ability to be a starter in the NFL and has been making small steps towards that end since entering the league.

No he shouldnt be classified as a bust as of yet... Not to mention the fact that he was a late 1st rounder, not a top ten pick - after which, nothing is certain.
Too early to tell if he's a bust. Plus he was injured the past couple of seasons.
The nutcracker is an art in itself and if it was the sole judge for players then what about Willis? Balmer does need to show progress but like Alex has had s**t thrown in his face the last few years by luck etc. I think the backups to Aubrayo will do just fine.
In fact I think all of them have higher potentials then Franklin, it terms of ability. RJF may even start with Aubrayo here. I believe he has really surprised the niners. If you doubt that, why has the defense been smothering the offense generally? That NT is a key for our defense. Besides that, he has been covering both second and first team practice. RJF is better right now then when Aubrayo showed up here. I doubt if the niners would trade RJF for guys like Dorsey, Red Bryant, or that former husker from the Rams that got traded. It might take Balmer a while to get back all the power in his upper body after his shoulder surgery and he does have a lot of lower body strength. I recall Ray Macdonald looking like a regular DL as a rookie but he looked as if he had Sopoagas legs last year. I think if a guy has the potential, the team will keep him. So far IMO RJF has done better then his buddy from LSU. Jackson. Balmer my be the same given the time.

You cannot compare GLEN DORSEY and KENTWAN BALMER. Balmer was nowhere near the kind of player that Dorsey was in college.
I dont think so just slow down.

Balmer was hurt last year. If he can stay healthy and fill in for Franklin he should be able to resurrect his career.
Wait until next year when Franklin is gone... then there will be more room for Balmer. The bottom line is two of three spots are taken with a capital T (Franklin & Smith)... and Soap has a pretty good strangle hold on the other position. He's not going to play when there are good players ahead of him. That said, I expect him to play more on third downs this year so we should get a chance to see him in action.

2 words: Mike Rumph. Also Kenny Philips has spent his career on IR. It's been almost a decade since Miami put out anyone good, that's why we don't draft them.
No. He's a threat to go all the way on his kickoff returns!

In all seriousness, it doesn't look good for him to be much more than a situational, rotational role player. The team had designs for him last season to eventually move into the NT role, but that has clearly gone to RJF in 2010. Balmer is suck behind Sopoaga on the LDE position, and there doesn't appear to be any substantial improvement this offseason to think that he can become a starter. He supposedly has a strong work ethic but just hasn't seem to put it all together.

I'm going to withhold judgment at this point, but clearly 2010 is a huge year for him. Nobody drafts a first rounder to play backup as a LDE.

I thought Franklin plays DT and Balmer majority at DE? Balmer is a 1st rd. choice he needs to be making his own room. If he gets it by default that means he still sucks. Hopefully he plays more than the 3rd downs and actually be good enough to rotate with Soap and Smith to give them some rest.
