Steve Young (David Carr) coming in from a bad situation (Tampa Bay) and providing competition for Joe Montana (Alex Smith)!

My how the mighty have fallen
I kinda already was aware of the reality of next season. Smith was going to be the starter and the niners will continue to avoid using a higher draft choice on a QB or go after a top tier QB through trade or FA. I don't have anything against carr other than his signing is a hope killer.
boooooooooooooo N.Davis BETTER be our #2 when Hill get's the boot.

championship
Wow glad we went out and signed someone that is going to do nothing for this team. Well I guess that's another 2 years as the #3 QB for Nate. Wasted money spent on Carr if you ask me.

He could easily take Alex Smiths starting job, they both have the physical tools.

You guys are all crazy if you think Alex Smith is really any better than David Carr, they both have upside but have been complete scrubs. Both have the ability to be good QB's but neither has proved they can.

!! Some actual sense in this thread, coming from Chief no less! Someone remember this thread, because if for some reason Carr has to step in this year, and does well, I'm gonna PM everyone who said this is a stupid move.

We have a really smart organization BTW. Being aggressive in FA and getting David Carr as our #1 signing...

Wrong.
If Smith bombs and Carr finally becomes the QB that everyone thought he would be than I am all for it. Steve Young sucked when he was with the bucs and became a stud for the Niners.
He's a #2, you guys are really over analyzing this.

That is optimism at it's finest.
It's a great move. Great. There is nothing but upside. Ideally, he'll never see a down because Smith becomes the player he should. If Smith doesn't I'm 100% sure he's better than both Hill and Davis. What's funny is the people who hate this were arguing at this time last year to give up multiple #1's for Cutler. You get a well rested, QB with enough upside to have been drafted #1 overall. I know this doesn't sound great, but it reminds me of when Testaverde left Tampa. He went to Cleveland as a backup to Kosar and wound up taking over and playing another 10 yrs at a pretty high level. I like this move.
Yeah! Another QB who has not fulfilled their perceived potential. So, lets sum it up... We now have:

2 QB's that have only played below their perceived potential.
1 QB, thats likely out of here, who has played above his perceived potential.
1 young QB that we know little about at the NFL level.

Championship!
Carr has a career record of 32-60.

Alex has a record of 16-27. I just realized that Alex is just about on pace for Carr's current winning percentage.

Nate Davis' 0-0 starting record looks like a hall of fame numbers compared to these guys.

Of course I grabbed this info off of the interwebs so it could be a complete lie.

Shaun Hill -- 10-8. His stats show 11 wins but one of those was mop up duty.

The real question is should Carr be called Alex Sr. or should we call Alex baby Carr?
