I think the Niners learned from the Redskins of the past few years... you can sign anybody and everybody, but it doesnt mean a thing if you dont get the actual on the field production. Theres no need to have a "Madden mentality" when it comes to Free Agency these days lol
I'm not angry at all, I'd much rather draft and try to develop our own talent then overpay for some overrated free agent. Especially this offseason when anyone worth a s**t is getting overpaid like hell.

ARIZ
I was happy when Warner retired and even more happy when Rolle Dansby and Boldin left but now they actually were ACTIVE in FA by replacing their S with an almost as good S, and looks like Porter will be an upgrade or at least the same as Dansby.

SEA
It looks like they might get Marshall and now Watson (not such a big deal), and they will even have a chance at T Jones if he doesn't sign with the Chiefs.

This is not cool. Our GM needs to counter the balance in the division by at least competing with some of these FA's. I'm not saying sign these same FA's because we have better players at some of these positions but competing in FA to improve our team. At least try to get a LT or RT that is PROVEN like Gathers or Guard on IND maybe. Also, to improve in the KR/PR game Washington would be a great signing, again a PROVEN talent whose leg will heal most probably before the season.

The Niners could take a chance on a rookie through the draft and we will but whenb their is proven talent that will materialize immediately rather than waiting to see IF a rookie will do well is a good way to improve this team.....especially since SEA and ARIZ are getting better.

What do you think? I really like a LT or RT before the draft and Washington as a pr/kr for a pick.

BTW...I have to make a point here on this "proven talent" argument. I'm had many discussions on this one and I think that term is WAY overused.

If the players available in Free Agency are so "proven", then why are they Free Agents at all? Why did their teams let them go? For god sake, Antrel Rolle just became the highest paid safety in NFL history!! ANTREL ROLLE!?!

To me, Free Agents more often than not are Fools Gold and almost never live up to their billing.

You also very seldom get a shot at a perenial all-pro (see Willis, Patrick).

Give me a bunch of draft picks and let FAs be damned. ;-)

The fact is that Marvin is right. More often than not, free agents are not worth it.

I wouldn't say not worth it, Justin Smith (Pro Bowl), Walt Harris (Pro Bowl), Nate Clements, Michael Lewis, Larry Allen (Pro Bowl), have all been pretty serviceable for us. Shoot even Barry Sims made an impact for us last year.
No.

Might not seem like it yet, but the structure we have in place right now is good enough to win the division and maybe even make a run in the playoffs.

Realistically the 49ers are one mega impact player away from being an NFC Super Bowl contender. That mega-star was not out there this year in FA, so no, I am not upset.

The only thing I'm dissapointed in is that we haven't used this cap free year to lock up our core guys with front loaded contracts, but that could happen any time this year. This was the worst FA crop ever and I'd be surpsied if any of the signing live up to anywhere close to their pay.

Agree 100% but they won't be resigning guys with an impending lockout coming. They trying to save money at this point to prepare for what many expect to happen. I believe once that situation is cleared up then you will see some contract extensions happening. It's gonna be a tense situation for many players around the league. I think this year's FA crop being so short with talent lead to teams overpaying. Chicago left themselves no other option. It's also the reason the Niners won't resign Sims or any other guys for depth b/c other teams are offering them starting positions with starter money. As we've just disagreed on though I wouldn't mind going after Porter and I like for them to make that move on Leon Washington. But they don't need to be doing anything major b/c there just isn't the talent out there.
No
Not this year . . . no.

I get that it's a huge gamble to sign long term before the lockout, the one player I want to get done is Willis. Give him an 8 year deal, front load it now. He plays a position that will easily fulfill that contract and he is the best at what he does. Now the flipside is that he knows this and maybe his agent would advise waiting. It's hard to know what goes on behind closed doors.

You are kinda making my point for me tho...

Harris, Lewis, Sims, and Allen came cheap. Clements and Smith are good players but will never live up to their contracts.

Meanwhile, the best players on the team are draft picks (Willis, Gore...possibly Crabtree in a few years).

Free Agency has a place, but I'm not a fan of paying huge contracts to "proven" players. They very seldom live up to the contracts.
not angry at all....

No not angry, I have come to expect this kind of approach from our front office.

OK...I just don't get that attitude anymore.

The Niners made huge contract signings in the past few years with Nate Clements and Justin Smith. What the hell are you talking about?

Not at all, if we get Leon Washington for a 3rd I will be extremely happy.

Other wise, I don't mind what is going on, it isn't exciting, but I was not expecting it to be.
