I just don't agree with this. Franklin was nothing before Manusky switched to the 1-gap. Personally, I think we have a few players that could plug in that spot with the 1-gap. But, it doesn't matter. Franklin will sign, he just doesn't want to get hurt in camp.

So you didn't see the penetration he made last year from that spot? He was in the backfield on damn near every run play. He has been solid holding down the D line.

I did, I just don't think he is a special player. I think he has become overrated. He had one good year in his career thus far, and suddenly he is a monster NT? I just don't buy it. I think the one-gap system helped him out tremendously, and he fits well in that. I just don't think he is the only one that could be successful in that scheme. I shouldn't take it away from him though, he did a great job.

Pretty much how I saw him, too.

The only thing that gives me pause about using the "overrated" tag is that the rest of the defense never hesitated to call him the best in the NFL. I believe Willis even said something about re-signing Franklin being the top off season priority.

Its one thing to support your teammate publicly, but I can't see those guys making the same types of comments if another player were possibly leaving. Say Soap for example.

So when does this fat ass plan on reporting.

I guess he will miss the entire camp and preseason.

I hate it when players do that because thats when they get injured.

Quote:

With the amount of hitting and contact drills that coach Mike Singletary employed in training camp last season, Franklin and those who advise him might think it's wise to avoid the risk.

Once the exhibition games begin, the hitting subsides. And that's when Franklin might make his whereabouts known.

Thanks. That clears that up. Might see him against the Raiders or Vikings (preseason).

I thought it could affect his play and I'm starting to think so now. Willis is getting a hat on him almost every game now. Guards and Fullbacks are getting to 2nd level on our LB's.

Sorry Aubrayo, you might not get that contract you wanted. Hope you can step it up like last year.

He definitely isn't playing like he was last year. If he doesn't raise his game, I say let him walk and start RJF. And maybe draft a NT in April.

I agree. I have been saying this since he came back. He is not the same. I think its because last year he thought he was playing for a big contract than he skips camp and his play suffers ala Dana Stubblefield. I don't think he'll get that big contract , at least not as big as he had hoped,if he keeps this horrible play up. LEt him walk and start RJF as you said.

All I can say is thank God we didn't sign him long term.
Franklin is playing at about the same level he was last year. The problem is; he is a one-gap player whose success has come from his quickness to penetrate between the center and a guard. That is very different from the way most NTs play in a 3-4 where they just stand up the center and a guard.

So the first time teams saw Franklin, they didn't know how to attack him. Now they have had time to assess his strengths and weaknesses. What teams are doing now is "reading" his slant and just letting him go that way as they push him out of the play. That leaves the guard to take on Spikes and the FB (or another guard) to go after Willis. It has worked well.

Manusky needs to come up with a way to counter what the defense is doing. Unfortunately, the best solution appears to be a 4-3 since Franklin does not seem to be able to be a two-gap player. There would be some advantages with a 4-3 in that Smith and McDonald would be very good pass rushers from a 4-3 but now they are only soaking up blockers. Put Sop and Franklin at DT and let McDonald with his quickness and Smith with his motor play the outside and I believe the pass rush problems would be reduced if not eliminated.

Coaches have to use player talent in a system that fits them, not try to fit a player into a system that doesn't fit. Round pegs in square holes don't work.

Hey........didn't the team draft a guy in 2008 that was supposed to be the NT for the future?

Man, I could've sworn.............Ya, Ya, now I'm almost sure of it. He was the pick before Rachal. You know, Rachal, the solid rock of a starting RG that we've seen playing lights out this season?

Man, that 2008 draft f**ked this team so many ways. THANKS ALOT SCOTTY! I should buy that man a beer!

Well your analysis definitley sounds believable. Can anyone else verify?
