I think its smart to make him prove himself again before forking over big dough hopefully last year wasn't a fluke.

My thoughts exactly. Do it again, and do it better big guy.
No Franklin, No problem? I doubt he will skip out on 7 million this year. But I wonder how much missing camp will affect his play.

Like it or not he is key to what we do on defense. Any new details from him or his agent?

I just don't agree with this. Franklin was nothing before Manusky switched to the 1-gap. Personally, I think we have a few players that could plug in that spot with the 1-gap. But, it doesn't matter. Franklin will sign, he just doesn't want to get hurt in camp.

So you didn't see the penetration he made last year from that spot? He was in the backfield on damn near every run play. He has been solid holding down the D line.

I did, I just don't think he is a special player. I think he has become overrated. He had one good year in his career thus far, and suddenly he is a monster NT? I just don't buy it. I think the one-gap system helped him out tremendously, and he fits well in that. I just don't think he is the only one that could be successful in that scheme. I shouldn't take it away from him though, he did a great job.
If you want to view this as Glass half full, Ricky Jean Francois, Kentwan Balmer and Isaac Sopoaga will all get first team reps at NT. This will help their player development and also figure out if Franklin is truly worth a huge long term contract or let him walk.

As posted before, red flags go off everywhere with Franklin. He was nothing in Baltimore, nothing in SF as a three technique, and only had one good year (his contract year) when he was a 1 gapper. 3 Gap NT are worth large money, 1 gap not so much so.

The front office wants to see if he can dominate two season in a row before giving a lot of guaranteed money. This is prudent and wise. My belief is franklin knows he had a great year, and out of fear of not being able to re produce his 2009 effort he will be holding out, trying to get the long term deal.

I think the shipped has already sailed for the 2010 season, I was under the impression he can only sign his one year tender at this point.

That's my only worry. Once he gets paid it's back to the mediocre play.

He can only sign the tender now and work out a deal and the end of the year.
