I do not think any QB will ever post the record in the SB that Joe did. Joe did have a little help though.

another Montana comparison bites the dust.
there will never be another QB like Montana. look at how good Manning and Brady are, and they both have now folded under super bowl pressure and thrown picks, and lost the game.
Joe did it every which way. 92 yds to go in a 2 min drill? no problem. blow out Dan Marino's Dolphins? blow out John Elway's Broncos? cake.
there will never again be a QB with 4 super bowl titles, 3 SB mvp's, and no SB int's in that span.
the crazy thing about his 3 SB mvp's is, winning it ONCE is so hard, and so rare, but to win it 3 times? to be standing at the podium with the MVP trophy 3 different times? and honestly he couldve easily won it all 4 times the time Rice won. he had 357 passing yds and 2 td's.

Super Bowl victories are only a partial measure of how good a quarterback is. Joe had JUST A LITTLE bit of help. This Colts team may not even be a playoff team without Manning. Can't say the same about the Niners of the 80's that had a metric ton of talent.

These are top level teams that went to the Superbowl: they all had high level talent.

Don't get me wrong, I respect both of them and wish the Niners had either one of them instead of what we do have. And this is not a knock on their fans either. But how soon some of those high paid so-called "experts" forget the many great accomplishments of Joe Montana especially in Super Bowls!
That in four SB's Joe never threw one interception!!
That in four SB's Joe out performed not one, but two Hall of Fame qb's (Marino, Elway)
That Montana lead his team on a last chance 92 yard TD drive..to win a SB! (sb23)
Some fans of Manning have said: "Manning doesn't have a Jerry Rice to throw to"
Well newsflash ya'll..neither did Joe when Niners beat the favored Bengals in SB16
Maybe some day Manning or another qb will surpass Joe's SuperBowl accomplishments..hell records are made to be broken...but as of tonight?
Manning isn't even the best in 2010, for one year at least that crown goes to DBrees.
Here end-ith the lesson.
Go Niners, 2010 is here!
1) I know this is not a Steve Young thread, but I'd just like to add that if you add SB 29 to the mix, 49ers QBs have combined for 18 TDs and ZERO interceptions. ;-)
2) Yes, Joe outperformed two HOF QBs, but actually Ken Anderson and Boomer Esiason weren't too bad either. ;-)
3) "Hey, is that John Candy?"
4) No, Manning hasn't had Rice, but he had already won 2 SBs before Jerry arrived and its not like Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne are chopped liver.
I've always preferred Steve to Joe, but that is more a function of my age than anything else. Steve was coming into prominence when I really started paying attention. Additionally, I felt bad for Steve trying to live up the the lofty expectations set by Joe.
Having said that, I do still believe that Joe is the best QB in NFL history. All of the pretenders to the throne (Elway, Marino, Brady, Manning) need to sit down now. ;-)

Again, you younger fans forget about the 81 and 84 teams. The 81 team wasn't all that talented at all relative to the later teams of the 80s and 90s (and most teams of today). Can we please stop saying "those teams had a metric ton of talent" because they didn't always have that. 84 guys were just awesome in implementing the Walsh system (on offense). If anything, the 84 team's defense was just incredible.
Also relative to the 49er success, it was no walk in the park to get past the NFC Championship game. Back in those times, that game was considered the "real" Super Bowl. The only 2 blow-out Super Bowls the 49ers had was 1984 and 1989. The Super Bowl against the Bengals was a nail-biter and wasn't a walk in the park at all.
Ya, the '81 team wasn't the Juggernaut people seem to think they were. They were a RB by committe team without iny big names on O. 3/4 of the secondary were rookies.
By '84, they had Wendell Tyler and Roger Craig and had established themselves.

And that's the difference between 4 Super Bowls and 1. Have the Colts ever had a defense that you could describe as "just incredible", as you did with the '84 Niners? Definitely not. Even in the '88 Super Bowl, we had 6 points at the beginning of the 4th quarter, but we were still in the game due to our defense shutting down the NFL MVP (Esiason) and an excellent two-pronged running attack in Woods/Brooks. And even then, we were a Lewis Billups drop away from that game turning out very differently.
Do you think a Manning led team has ever had the luxury of still being in a playoff game after scoring 6 points through 3 quarters?

HELL YEAH. Montana survives another decade. Brady and Manning took their best shots and ultimately fell short. I can say this now, but I think both of them fall way short.
2 or maybe 3 new QB's will emerge, perhaps even someone who plays now. Montana will always have to contend with someone because it is so damn easy to put up huge numbers in this era that as long as a top flight QB can stay healthy for 12+ years they will easily pass Montana's numbers. Then all you have to do is couple those so called "superior" numbers with a Super Bowl win and now there is a debate.
Better luck next time suckers
