This from today's New York Times on the Colts owner:
"After Irsay took over the Colts from his father, Robert (who abused alcohol and made enemies with his temperament [and made a mess of the franchise--my note]), Jim's stewardship brought significant improvement. He sold more than $100 million in assets outside football, he said, to reinvest in a team that has won the most N.F.L. games in the last decade."
Could Jed be that guy? I guess he would need an All-Pro quarterback (tall, cerebral, gutsy) and a GM like Polian who can outthink the draft, finding players in the mid- and late-rounds. Do we have the pieces? There are some parallels if 3 key people can grow into their roles.
It's a great article, btw, talking about how Irsay still has his "flower-child" sensibility, how he bought the scroll that Kerouac wrote "On the Road" on, hangs out with Steven Stills and John Mellencamp and Patti Smith, how he was instrumental in blackballing Rush Limbaugh as a potential team owner, how he's led a messed-up team to the pinnacle of football.

Good positive post.
We'll have to see how this plays out with Jed. I do feel better with him at the helm instead of Dr. John.

He could be the best owner in the NFL... he just needs to strike gold like Irsay did

Irsay has Bill Polian. Polian makes all the football decisions, including who to hire and fire, and not Irsay. He is more valuable to that franchise than Peyton Manning. He is the one that let's Marvin Harrison go and replaces him with Pierre Garcon. He is the biggest reason why the Colts get impact players in 6th and 7th round every offseason that replace starters. He is the reason they are perennial contenders. York Jr. has Scot Mcloughan and Parage Marathe in his front office. So I wouldn't hold my breathe.

Only time will tell, but in order for him successful he has to surround himself with better football people. Parage, McClueless and Sing is hardly an all star cast.

Singletary is widely recognized as one of the best LB's ever to play, I think he is about as good of a football guy as you will find in any organization.

There is no correlation in being the best LB ever and being a good HC. In terms of coaching experience he is a green pea.

Just because you say a thing is so doesn't make it so.

You obviously haven't got the memo of me being the smartest guy of all time.

I think maybe McCloughan's the key. The staff has promise, Singletary has some great attributes, Manusky's an up and coming DC, Mike Johnson, Raye (well...), and Jed is an upgrade over Dr. Goofy. But can our GM get anywhere near Polian-land, that's the question? This year's draft and off-season will tell us a lot.

Wow, I thought this was going to be more about stealing away the francise. Nice surprise to see what JR Irsay did for his community and team.

That was the a-hole dad, I guess. Makes you think there could be life after Dr. Y.
