Kense, the Yorks didn't make their money listening to yes men. But they are loyal to a fault. I think we are seeing Jed grow up a little bit.

All York family decisions go through Denise. Doesn't mean Jed didn't have input. It is his personal responsibility. Whether he took the decision to her, or she took the decision to him, it says something that they valued the team over Marathe. And remeber, Marathe predates Jed by years in the family hierarchy, and the 49ers organization.

The banner spooked him. Jed wants to be liked. His family forced him to demote his boy.

I don't think so. I think Jed doesn't want Paraage there but it would look blatantly obvious that Paraage was the rat or has been the problem all along and it has been underneath Jed's nose this entire time. Easing into it doesn't give that outright opinion and they both can save face.

Strategery. Even though everyone know is, they can still hide behind this decision.
Thanks for the explanation everyone. Sounds interesting. Based on what I'm gathering from various posts and tweets it sounds like Paragg and Jed are close (or once were). But coaches didn't like Paragg and are having a hard time dealing with him which is putting a strain on the entire organization. I'm sure with Tomsula (Jeds other buddy) now upset with Paraag Jed is finally seeing and willing to make a change. I'm sure the banner flown over the stadium and Jed's popularity poll crashing down helped him make some of these decisions. This sounds right or am I missing something?

One thing that worries me about Jed, is that he's trying to create a family culture with all personnel that just doesn't work anymore in this day and age with free agency. It worked for Eddie D at that time, but the business model in the NFL is different now. Jed needs to let the past be the past. You can't have a good ol boys club anymore. At least not to the extent Eddie D had it going in the 80's. It's a different era. I'm glad Jed is making changes. Hope he makes a few more while being balanced however.

Self-serving doesn't mean he's wrong here either. I never thought that they would let Marathe go or even demote him, I was just hoping that they'd push him a little more towards the business side of things and restrain him from messing around in the football side of the things but they exceeded my expectations, holy s**t, never thought that I'd say that about the Yorks.

Oh yeah, I think it's self-evident that the news is really surprising for those of us outside of the building. It is for me too.

A lot of that though is because as fans we really don't know that much about Marathe, and the "Myth of Marathe" and all his power as a shadowy figure who is Jed's golden boy is something that Kawakami more than anybody has spent time building up.

I guess want I want to know is if this was surprising news to people INSIDE the building, because as of right now, it sure looks like everything Kawakami has been spinning for the last few months is a load of horsesh!t.

That's not that surprising as it's what he's known for, but that he just had two months of "insider analysis" columns blow up in his face is pretty undeniable, IMO.

It's not like this on all teams, but Baalke as GM runs all football operations and reports directly to York, and Yu, and then Marathe, and soon Guido run all non-football operations and report directly to York.

Because of that, I think either one of two things is probably happening.

BORING (BUT LIKELY) OPTION 1: This literally means nothing, as how we've already seen with the transition from Yu to Marathe, York might just be treating the "President" role as a rotating position in which people who specialize in the needed thing step into it and out of it. Yu was "President" to get the stadium deal done, and then stepped out of that role but still stayed with the team after that goal was accomplished.

Then Marathe, the salary cap specialist, stepped into the "President" role when the big thing moving forward over the last few years was to manage the salary cap transition everyone knew the 9ers would be going through. That transition is now done, though, so Marathe steps down from the "President" role but also still stays with the organizations and keeps specializing in what he's specializing in.

So the question is, what's the big issue coming up that the "President" role would be dealing with? After all the protesting, the banner flying over Levi's last week and all the talk of selling of seat licenses and under-attendance, you're going to want to put in the "President" role the person who can transition through that while the team sucks..

Here's Al Guido's job description from the 49ers website: "sales, fan experience/service, marketing, stadium operations, corporate communications"

I seriosuly think this is what could be going on.

OPTION 2: This is really about Marathe and leaks about Kaepernick, and Marathe and warring with Tomsula over in-game playcalling and analytics. If that's true, the key part here is that for the 49ers the "President" role is not part of the hierarchy for football operations. So, if these things about Marathe are true, it basically means he was meddling on the "football operations" side of thing when he's absolutely not supposed in the organizational hierarchy, and he just got demoted for it.
Paraag is over contracts, salary cap and analytics. All of which impact heavily on football operations. 49er structure is not the normal structure. On most teams analytics, salary cap and player contract negotiation is under the GM. With the 49ers they report to Paraag.

The problems with conflict and disfunction will not be resolved until you have those 3 functions reporting to the GM and have Paraag out of those areas. Maybe with the change you will stop the leaks that seemed to start once he was promoted to President.

Check out post 329 (same page as what you're quoting) 341 and 342 where this is discussed. Paraag reports to Baalke in those areas (jobs he kept when he became Prez). In his duties as President though he's parallel with Baalke and reports to York.
Is Guido interim?

Kense, I agree that the banner had effect. I just think you are incorrect about who it spooked. It upset Denise. It may have upset Jed, but I think upsetting her was the final straw, and she wanted to see immediate action. She is the brains, and wears the pants in that family.

Now that is a great question. And whether he is or isn't, where does the Football operation become impacted? The 49ers need one person in charge bewteen Football ops and the business side to resolve conflicts before they go to Jed. It should be a person with a football back ground, and he needs to have successfully run business at some point.

That is what they are saying: http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article47927730.html. Apparently Guido used to work for the Cowboys and has been our COO for 2 years. He was instrumental in fleecing, I mean selling, SBL to season ticket holders to get the new stadium built.
