Remember, according to Kawakami Marathe was supposed to be the golden boy and the only untouchable in the organization except for Jed.

That wasn't just according to Kawakami. Ira Miller, Ray Ratto and many others have said the same thing. The Yorks loved Marathe, its a big part of why he moved up in the organization so fast. I doubt anyone expected him to be demoted like this, he's Jed's BFF and right hand man, so no I don't think it is BS at all, I have no trouble believing that after all these years, a lot of people are stunned over this, both inside and outside the organization.

As long as Baalke and Jed are there I don't see this meaning anything.

If Jed will demote his BFF and send him off in chase of soccer glory, then I have no trouble believing that he'll fire anyone else under him.

Is that since Marathe took over the president title from Yu?
IMO the 49ers could really use a football operations person above the GM. Someone to buffer between football and Jed.

Nah, it was the same story with Yu.

But yeah, agreed that the 9ers could use another person in the hierarchy.

For the 9ers it's the GM (football) and President (non-football) reporting to York.

IIRC for a lot of teams it's the GM (football) and Director of Non-Football Operations (or whatever) who both report to the President who then reports to the owner.

FWIW I think the wrong way to look at this is that York has installed himself as what most people call "President," although that is a way you could read it.

Instead, I think the better way to think about it is that it's really useful to have someone who can adjudicate between the football and non-football side of things, but still has to go to someone else if (the owner) if they want to fire someone. Basically, you put someone in the middle of the triangle to mediate the disputes between the football side, the non-football side, and the owner, and the 9ers don't have anyone to do that right now. (it can lead to the two sides battling to curry favor with the owner, who is the ultimate decider).

Yeah but I bet you he will be paying Paarag the same amount or even pay him more to step down, not to hurt his feelings. This is not a normal relationship, Jed has no idea what he's doing and he'll keep hiring yes men. The first person to come in and challenge him is gone.
This made my day!!! Wont solve all of your problem, but getting Marathe out of power is a step in the right direction.

Great news. But does this mean Jimmy T is staying?

most likely unless he gets s**t stomped the last five games. them siding with tomsula over their cap specialist and president means they believe in tomsula, for whatever reason

I don't think it means he's staying...Jed wasn't gonna fire JT before the end of the year regardless. I don't see how this says they believe in Tomsula at all?

Maybe Tomsula will be able to call his own plays now...

Kense, the Yorks didn't make their money listening to yes men. But they are loyal to a fault. I think we are seeing Jed grow up a little bit.

Jed has nothing to do with the families success. I'm sure his Uncle or somebody forced him to do this.

Well, yeah, maybe the "Many people who know the organization well" who are stunned by this are Ratto and Miller.

I mean, Kawakami's not claiming that anybody WITHIN the organization is stunned by this.

Kawakami is certainly stunned though, as he's spent the past few months pretending to be the sole font of wisdom into the informal power hierarchy within the 49ers, and it just blew up in his face in the most obvious way imaginable.

You don't think these many stunned people is AT ALL self-serving? When's the last time Kawakami did anything that wasn't self-serving?

Yeah, the problem is that he kept all his "football side" duties while also taking a huge promotion on the "non-football" side.

I think the main problem is that he's been with the team for 14 years and throughout most of that time they were terrible. He's had friction with every single head coach that this team has hired, as well as with McCloughan. He might not be the only problem at 49ers HQ, but I would say that outside of the ownership, he's been the biggest one. He clearly had issues with maintaining boundaries and letting the football people do their jobs. The 49ers are all the better for him having less power and control.

All the crap coming out of HQ's sounds underhanded, backstabbing, insular and dysfunctional. Organizations take on the personality at the top ...

And.....as a 49ers fan why would that be a problem.

Pay him 5 times as much to step down.....just as long as he does it, who cares.

Self-serving doesn't mean he's wrong here either. I never thought that they would let Marathe go or even demote him, I was just hoping that they'd push him a little more towards the business side of things and restrain him from messing around in the football side of the things but they exceeded my expectations, holy s**t, never thought that I'd say that about the Yorks.

Because it shows he's too much of a coward to cut him totally out of the picture. He's still involved with the team.
