Football Outsiders: Andy Lee was the best punter in the NFL last season

As it's always the case with FOs, they use a unique formula to determine who was the best player at his position. And Lee ended up on top.

Quote:
How did Andy Lee end up higher than Shane Lechler? There are two reasons. First, while Lechler had a much higher gross punt average and even a better net punt average, Lee was better at specifically keeping punts away from return men. 66 percent of Lechler's punts were returnable, 13 percent were touchbacks, and the other 21 percent were fair caught, downed, or landed out of bounds. By comparison, 58 percent of Lee's punts were returnable, 8 percent were touchbacks, and 34 percent were fair caught, downed, or landed out of bounds.

Second, we have a special weather adjustment in our special teams ratings for punts in San Francisco, because of the wind currents associated with that stadium. It's fully possible that this adjustment is a little too strong, and Lee didn't actually have a better season than Lechler. But he's still closer than people realize. Lee and Lechler both were elected to the Pro Bowl, a rare example of the Pro Bowl getting a position completely and totally correct.

I haven't lived in the Bay for awhile, but isn't the winds in Oakland and SF prettysimilar?

i think they are referring to the wind currents in the stadium specifically. with candlesticks design and that fairly large hill sitting so close it can cause some weird cross winds.

Wow Im sure playoff teams fans are sittin around talkin about how good their PUNTER is. I remember in the 80's and 90's niner fans were talkin about the punter bein good or bad. I guess since our team hasnt done that great the last 7 years fans need somethin to hold their heads up about.

the steelers screwed that up. they had the poison pill option, and chose not to use it for no good reason, and we got him back. they couldve had Lee for the same price and shut the door on us.

but they didnt, and the next year he went to the pro bowl, and now again this year.
Andy Lee is the greatest punter of all time. ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^
Hes the best looking punter as well
