My wife is one of those half way fans that pays attention to football only because i do, but she said one of the truest things I have herd in a long time when talking about Alex Smith. She asked why does it seem like whenever Alex has to throw the ball beyond 30 yards it always looks like a Hail Mary?

I had to pause and laugh a bit because she was dead on. After watching Nate throw, it is very easy to say that Alex does not have an NFL arm. Nate throws the ball 40 yards effortlessly on the run not setting his feet, while Alex has to set is feet and step into it with all his might to get the ball beyond 40 yards and when he does throw it it has a hang time of a punt. I can think of 3 or 4 times this season the Crabs was sent streaking or on deep ins that Alex under threw on.

If he knows the Offense then Nate should have shot at competing with Alex in the off season.

If your wife is a halfway fan. Then she probably doesn't know anything about what a Hail Mary is and probably heard you say it so she's basing her statement on your knowledge. Have her watch 2 or 3 seasons on NCAA ball and then invite her to watch an NFL game with you. I'm not trying to be a jerk at all. It's just that I cringe whenever I see or hear someone expounding on someone with little knowledge says the truest thing they ever hear.

Smith can't throw the deep ball with any constancy. He might get lucky every once in a while but he's not a deep pass QB...which is sketchy because he is only really productive in the shotgun.

You DO realize I only talk about Smith if it's relevant to the conversation right? Let's not get into a pissin match over the two kay? Cause this is fast becoming the replacement thread for Hill v. Smith.

I think I did state that I like Davis. But you're speaking in subjective assumptions about how much better he is than Alex. You aren't showing me anything to back your claim up. And make no mistake about it. The highlight video is HIGHLIGHTS no complete footage. Notice how ALL the passes ARE completed. What about the ones that he DIDN'T complete? Cause I know for a fact that he did not complete all his throws.

The point still is that Nate has alot of upside. I do agree that he should the very LEAST be in competition for the #2 spot. That is the natural progression for a late round QB. Put your time in and you CAN eventually be a Starter. Whether by hard work or injury. You STILL gotta put your time in. Nothing is just handed to you. Shaun is a perfect example of that. So too is Tom Brady. Sometimes it takes forever. And then sometimes you blink and BAM your number is called on game day 1 quarter or less into the ball game.

Nate imho at THIS TIME is no better nor worse than Smith. He is young and will get his chances. That's all that any of us can hope for.

~Ceadder

Bold and italics added by me for emphasis. Here's the question...at THIS TIME, he is no worse than Smith. Yet Smith has been in the league 5 years, albeit injured a decent portion of that. Davis has been in the league for 1 year, got very few reps in the pre-season because of the QB competition between Smith and Hill, and has played very little, if any, at QB in practice this season, as Hill and then Smith were getting all the reps. Yet at THIS TIME, he is no worse than Smith. With a fraction of the reps, with his learning disability supposedly slowing his ability to learn the offense, with this being his rookie season, you have just stated he is equal to Alex Smith. So then why is it so absurd to think he could possibly start sometime next year?

If they are equal at this time (no better, no worse...your words), I would think logic would dictate that the younger guy would be the one you would want to take over. I mean, if he can equal Smith with all those things going against him, imagine what he can do with some reps.

Excellent points all. By next camp. he should at the very least, get an extended look to see what he's assimilated. The physical skills are undeniable and it seems the instinctive or intangible parts are probably superior to Smith's. So, what's the problem then with getting a good look?
First, let me say that I am an Alex Smith supporter, because he can do some things that Shaun Hill just cannot do.

However, I have to agree with JoeCool and a few others who point out that he did show better pocket presense than AS and SH combined. Maybe that is the result of
playing with an inferior line (hmm...makes you wonder how he would perform with
our starters).

Second, he has accuracy and touch that I don't think AS has. Granted this are against 3rd/4th stringers, quite a few who are probably no longer around, or are on the Browns,Lions or Rams roster.

Third, he does have a quick release (something we haven't seen around here since maybe Garcia) and can throw the long outs.

Fourth, he seems to have command of the game and also looks to either throw the ball to checkoffs or away (and not to a LB or DB).

With all that said, one would have to see how he plays against the folks he would see every Sunday. That means he needs to have game time in preseason against the 1st or at least 2nd string players in games 1-3. He also needs to be in with what would amount to our first string players to see if he can build chemistry with the starters.

If AS is our staring QB, Davis needs to be our back -p QB to start the year, which means SH needs to go. If that doesn't happen I don't see how he will get any develop time or reps. It's also not fair to SH, as who knows he could land somewhere that just needs a game manager and already has the rest of the parts in place.

Last I would say that we all need to understand that until we see him against Sunday starters we won't know if he can improvise, make sound decisions and use his skills effectively. That can be said about every young QB being developed.

Game speed makes a big difference for QBs, and it's not fair to judge him without our starting O-Line and the starting defenses he will be facing on Sundays if he gets in the game.

1) Watching a highlight video. They only show the best plays. None of the worst...

2) You realize he was playing against 4th stringers in the Preseason who are no longer in the NFL?

Actually it was every throw from preseason, but after watching Smith I agree it looks like a highlight video.

Oh and now its 4th stringers

But 3 things strike me here from what I did watch.

1).Great job QB'ing the team against 3rd and 4rth Teamers trying to make the squads.

2)Even though one of them was a $4|t team. This kind of puts thing into perspective when the QB has success against the Retreads 3rd and 4th team Camp Fodder.

3) He throws way too much off his back foot. Now granted it's probably because he doesn't have time to set his feet but still even when he's rolling out he does it. While he can deliver the ball due more to 1 and 2 try doing that against 1st team players consistently. People think Alex does that too much? Nate did it on 2/3 of his passes.

Now I am impressed with a Rookie QB that is spot on accurate but as I pointed out let's see that against a Philly Defense before we go out and hoist him on our shoulders as the future.

But you know how this guy could get his Reps in and better determine his future with this team?

Have HIM run the F'N Tazer instead of scrubs like Spurlock!!! Or heck we could run the Wildcat AND the Spread whenever Defenses start pinning their ears back. Oh man I'm still not happy with the Coaching decisions that happened this season.

Using Davis in the Taser is a great idea. I don't understand why he wasn't put in once this year......... This video proved that he knows how to get rid of the ball instead of taking the sack......

He may be a rookie but he's too talented to just sit..........

Waiting on his Crabtree vid.

if people cannot see the raw talent in this vid they are completely blind !
Maybe next year will be a little early to start him in crucial games or vs the better teams but i would take a look at him in some reg season games (like BW did with Joe in his second year) and i definitely think he'll be ready to lead us in 2011

Preseason argument ? well as other said hill and smith never looked as good in any of their preseason games
And you cannot say about his ability in reg season games as long as he hasn't played a few yet ! And i said a few cos i expect some in the zone to bash him if he plays poorly in his first game
We'll have to give the kid some time and most of all some game experience
And look how he looks better than smith on the roll out ... but anybody could do a better job than smith of course

Preseason or not, I have to admit it is exciting to see. I like the way he shows awareness of the rush & where receivers are at the same time.

What's up with the somber music track though? This feels like a memorial video for a player who died. Someone fire the music editor.

Just watched it again and take a look at the first pass into the endzone to Delanie. There really isn't any pressure but Nate still shift over INTO the passing lane for an easy throw. He didn't stand there and try to throw it over the DL as we have seen be some QB's, he moved when he didn't need to and made a tight throw into an easy one.

Yeah I liked that. It shows that he has the ability to take pressure off himself. Which is why I think he should at the very least get a shot at QB2. He's the only QB on our roster that shows that. But without seeing him do it against first team Defenses I'm not going to start in on saying that he should be QB1. I need something more than Preseason footage against 3rd and 4th teamers to go on.

~Ceadder

The Cowboy game.... He started against the Cowboys First team Defense for 3 Qtr's and then Duane Haurd came in.

is he going to make a vid for vd also?
I understand the preseason argument, but wasn't he getting "blocked for" and "throwing to" 3rd and 4th stringers on the niners?

well...people argue about nate looking good against 3rd stringers...

BUT, nate has looked BETTER in his preseason play than Alex has looked in preseason over the past few years.

I can honestly say that Alex NEVER looked that natural, even in preseason, whether it was his rookie year or not....

It amazes me how haters can never let go of the Alex bashing,it's like some demented sickness

On a POSITIVE NOTE Nate looked very impressive in although it was against 3rd/4th stringers and played better in the ps than Alex AND HILL whom you seemed to have forgotten about

The QB position will be alright with Smith and Nate next year

LOL. I don't think that the man is Hating on Smith on this one. He seems to be pointing out an observation that many have made; just as you have by including Hill.

I liked the music selection...it starts off slow, kind of like Nate getting his first plays in the NFL.... he kinda runs to the right and throws the ball out of bounce...and as the song goes on, the better feel for the game Nate starts showing....

I think it was a perfect music selection
man.....what do yall think of that play at 3:00... someone analyze that shhhhh1t.

One thing we can all agree on; I bet Davis has said this to MS "put me in coach". Davis has mumbled under his breath many times that he should be the man in watching some of Alex's sometimes erratic play!

If given everything equal between Davis and Smith right this minute...you'd have to be Stevie Wonder not to see Davis would be way ahead of where Alex is now!
