Just watched Nate Davis highlights!

It'll definitely be interesting to watch his progression over the next few years. I agree that he has all the physical tools like others have mentioned - poise, accuracy, quick release, good zip.

However, let's not underestimate the mental part of the game. We haven't seen any of him against a starting NFL defense in a game that counts.

If accuracy, a quick release and good zip are all that's needed to be a good NFL QB, JTO would be a top 5 QB. He has those qualities in aces. Problem was, he wasn't great at reading complex defenses and he lacked the discipline to not throw the ball if he wasn't sure where it was going.

Wow... From this video, it looks like Alex can learn a few things from Nate.

I was actually fooled on a couple of those play-action fake hand-offs (something that has never happened with Alex).

I saw Nate step up into the pocket several times. More often than not, good things came of this. Also Nate scrambled to his left as well as his right. I swear the D line looked lost when Nate went to the left. (Alex please take note).

Nate looks to have a natural ability to judge speed, timing, and depth. I was surprised how often he hit receivers in stride or put the ball in the best position for the receiver to make a play.

On the bad side.... There were a couple of throws that it looked like Nate and the receiver were not on the same page. Also, he needs to make sure his throw-away passes go completely out of bounds (no need to give the D a chance to make a play). And last; but not least, the small dump-off passes into traffic (the ones to the RB when he has the entire o-line around him) make me nervous. They may work on 3rd stringers; but, I think these are just begging to be tipped or intercepted by starting linemen...

I hope Nate Davis develops. He's a 9er QB and we can never have too many good players. But until he does something meaningful I'm not banking on him being the future QB.

If your wife is a halfway fan. Then she probably doesn't know anything about what a Hail Mary is and probably heard you say it so she's basing her statement on your knowledge. Have her watch 2 or 3 seasons on NCAA ball and then invite her to watch an NFL game with you. I'm not trying to be a jerk at all. It's just that I cringe whenever I see or hear someone expounding on someone with little knowledge says the truest thing they ever hear.

Smith can't throw the deep ball with any constancy. He might get lucky every once in a while but he's not a deep pass QB...which is sketchy because he is only really productive in the shotgun.

You DO realize I only talk about Smith if it's relevant to the conversation right? Let's not get into a pissin match over the two kay? Cause this is fast becoming the replacement thread for Hill v. Smith.

I think I did state that I like Davis. But you're speaking in subjective assumptions about how much better he is than Alex. You aren't showing me anything to back your claim up. And make no mistake about it. The highlight video is HIGHLIGHTS no complete footage. Notice how ALL the passes ARE completed. What about the ones that he DIDN'T complete? Cause I know for a fact that he did not complete all his throws.

The point still is that Nate has alot of upside. I do agree that he should the very LEAST be in competition for the #2 spot. That is the natural progression for a late round QB. Put your time in and you CAN eventually be a Starter. Whether by hard work or injury. You STILL gotta put your time in. Nothing is just handed to you. Shaun is a perfect example of that. So too is Tom Brady. Sometimes it takes forever. And then sometimes you blink and BAM your number is called on game day 1 quarter or less into the ball game.

Nate imho at THIS TIME is no better nor worse than Smith. He is young and will get his chances. That's all that any of us can hope for.

I was going to point this out as well but you beat me to it. It IS every pass from preseason, not a highlight film. Ceadderman, I do respect you and your posts but when you make comments like this it is clear to me you have such a great desire to see smith be great that you are no longer looking at the QB situation objectively.

I do not care what name is on the QB's jersey for the niners. Preseason is to see what you have in our young players. What I saw from Nate is that I would like to see more. He was being totally harassed and showed great pocket presence and had nice accuracy hitting his receivers in stride. Alex doesn't do that much.

Its honestly night and day the differences between Nate and Alex. I don't wish for a crappy season next year but I just wish Alex was gone so Nate could get it going already.

this my main issue with what I see when watching Alex Smith and then watching journeymen QB's, noodle arm QB's and rookie QB's. Like I have said over and over again, Alex could possibly become an average QB but doesn't it concern people that he always looks worse than just about every QB who comes in this team. Good thing Huard wasn't given a chance because I think he would have wowed us and our extremely low standard for this position.

I am even madder now that I saw this video...If you saw his college film it was just as impressive, he has the prefect relese and is accurate, good head. Donovan McNabb said he is the next upcoming QB he is most interested in seeing. He wanted to work with him this offseason. Jerry Rice was the one that suggested we take him in the 5th round. They know a lot more about talent than most in the league and he was taken in the 5th because he had ADHD and Dyslexia. The one thing about those disorders is they are far superior in crisis situations. I will stake LOL my total reputation that he will be a pro bowl QB. He is better than Alex Smith will ever be!!

I'm just plain schizophrenic on that issue.

On the one hand, it's a 50/50 prospect that we'll be seeing Davis competing for the starting job within the next 12-24 months so you'd like to maximize his practice snaps in the interim. On the other, you'd hate to see yet another promising QB prospect blown to atoms behind our rebuilding O-line, especially so since Hill is a cheap and reasonably good back up.

Did you even watch the full video? It showed plenty of his incomplete passes. What i liked is how calm he looked in the pocket. He didn't give up on plays as soon as he saw a pass rush in his face.

I'm not saying he's the next Steve Young or anything, but from what we've seen, he at least deserves a shot. Hill's had his shot. He's on his way down. I just hope they don't let Davis sit at #3, playing safety in practice. Waste of talent. Lets at least see if he's got what it takes.
