Our inability to evaluate talent

While I was watching the games yesterday, I flashed on that, too...they showed Spurlock's 77 yd punt return for a TD. I saw Smiley play in Miami...Fields has done well in Denver, Kozier in Dallas. Those are just a few...I'm sure there's more. While I agree we could use a better GM, it doesn't look like that's going to happen, at least not for next year. Let's face it...the York's are not only cheap, but they've fired Mariucci, hired a failed NFL coach (Erickson) and two consecutive rookies. Much as I like and appreciate many things about Singletary, he's a boy among men vs his peers in the league.

If Spurlock didn't make that play yesterday, no one would be saying anything. His skills have really put Tampa Bay over the top.

No one is saying that he is great, only that he has talent that our team never even tried to tap into. That could have been us that he was returning punts for instead of Battle. We should have at least given him to opportunity to return kicks to see what he was capable of before letting him go.

Spurlock took one to the house for Tampa this weekend!

Who dropped the ball on this one, the GM or head coach? That's the most important question here.

We have the worst staff I've ever seen at evaluating talent. But you must consider the Yorks got a bargain priced coaching staff as well. So in that way they are the envy of the league.
You and I seem to be the only ones claiming the staff was assembled with the #1 priority being low salary. I think all the other zoners are in denial. Just ask yourself how may other teams were after the likes of Scottie, Mike, and Jimmy.
Put me in there too, I have been saying that the Yorks are all about money and not the wins and losses. Why do you think they resist hiring people like the Holmegrins or Shanahans. one answer, money.

You guys fail to realize is scotty is a great evaluator of talent! Gems like D walker, Josh Morgan, parys! All guys taken in later rounds! These are the picks you have to appreciate! The early rounds are easy picks, because of all the info on these guys! You blame scotty for keeping battle over spurlock?? LOL!!!!
1. When it comes down to it, Battle is a better WR! Whats more important, a guy who returns kicks and can't run routes and doesn't know the play book? Or a guy who knows the playbook, runs great route and is known for being clutch on 3rd downs!
2. You think scotty doesn't get advice from Al everest or sing on which player they would rather have? Clearly he does!
3. What if a wr got hurt and spurlock and battle were the only two guys left on the depth chart, who would you rather run route???
Scotty is the man!

Do you guys think there could be blame on both sides? I mean, this is the first season where players feel comfortable communicating their needs to the Head Coach.
In order for a player to maximize his ability, there must be communication with his coach. I think Nolan acquired too many "yes men" type of players while he was "GM". I think those players did exactly what they were told no matter what and that's how Nolan coached.
A player must communicate to his position coach that he doesn't feel comfortable with this type of set or whatever. A position coach must see some weaknesses also but there must be communication.
Bill Walsh kneeling down with Montana is a perfect example of their comfort and communication with one another.

Myself and many others claimed Battle was useless to our team. We were called unappreciative and haters by Battle supporters. Some dumb posters threw stats that Battle was leading our team in receptions before he got hurt. It didn't matter that he wasn't leading in yards and did not have a single TD. It didn't matter that Jason Hill did way more with less opportunities. These dumb posters claimed he wasn't injury prone, was still effective, solid and was a warrior. LOL, as if other football players aren't warriors.

Not to mention when they defended him for being a punt returner and "useful" in ST. ugghnnn
Did you happen to see who downed the punt at the 1 yard line? Oh that's right, you didn't. I guess Michael Robinson ought to go also.

I actually agree with you on everything but Battle/Spurlock deal. Battle has become our #5 or #6 receiver so if someone were to go down Battle would not make that much of a difference. They key is on Special Teams. Given his speed, Spurlock should have been given an opportunity to see if he could return kicks. That has been a glaring need of ours for years (last year being the exception). We should have been evaluating someone as a back-up early in the year and Spurlock would have been a great fit.

lmao! I just got done watching the bucs vs saints highlights and I saw spurlock return a punt for a td. I thought to myself "here we are struggling to find a punt returner and the one guy we never gave a shot to, gets released, and is now running back p.r. for td's somewhere else lol!

when it comes to who is better in the KR game, I agree spurlock is younger and WAY more explosive! I wanted him to get a shot at it over B jones or battle! But we don't see everything the coaches do. I don't know what they saw, but obviously it wasn't good! As for battle's position on the depth chart, I think its because we want to see what we got with younger players like morgan and hill and crabs! We know what we have with battle, and he has done nothing but remain a solid player! I'd rather have cut bruce than spurlock, just cause we know it's the end for issaac!!
But the fact that people are ripping the GM cause of that one move it just typical of niner talk!

We have to get better at this!
