I still cant fathom how an adult of average intelligence doesn't understand this. QB's are not boxers, golfers, tennis players. Those athletes have win-loss records. Football players do not. Football teams do. They are one player playing in a game that is known as the ULTIMATE TEAM SPORT. Football is the most intricate game ever played. AN NFL offense has so many moving parts, so many things that have to happen to be successful. A tackle holding a block for an extra tenth of a second can be the difference between a sack/fumble and a 65 yard TD.
The QB may be the most important player on the field at any given time (sometimes it is the RB) but attaching wins and losses to the QB alone is plain stupid. No matter how many people on internet forums, at bars, yelling on AM radio in the middle of the night, or even the "experts" on national TV speak in those terms. Plain stupid.
It's simple: Alex dictates our style of play. Our style of play with Hill in at QB produced more wins than our style of play with Alex at QB.

I think our offensive line dictates our style of play. Our inability to open holes for our Probowl running back (or any of the backup running backs) dictates our style of play. Those were problems before Alex came in and still are today and by all accounts are SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE with Staley and Pashos out. Putting the QB in the shotgun is almost a necessity at this point.
Alex Smith, under center, has played at least as good as Shaun Hill this season. More importantly it has nothing to do with style of play because today we're sustaining much longer drives, scoring more points, and doing both more consistently than when Hill was behind center. These are FACTS, not my opinion.

Alex Smith has played only one good defense or one good team and he's 2-4 and was a part in losing some VERY meaningful games.
Listen to the Singletary show on KNBR from this week. He said he doesn't like it when people say Alex is 2-4. Alex is 1 guy on a 53 man roster. It's like saying Vernon Davis is 2-4. It's dumb. I've always said that the QB gets too much credit for winning and too much blame for losing. How about the Seattle game? How many guys make 1 play and maybe we win? More than just Alex, that's for sure!!

Thats not true. We played awful teams early on, except Arizona who started off slow. Good teams also learned from our play how to beat us, and it's simple against HIll. Load the box and cover short/intermediate routes and force him to throw deep. result? See Atlanta and Houston games... Hill had so many 3 and outs its hard to fathom. Furthermore, when we're down in a game big where our defense doesn't show up, or the offense is really good, we lose.

I still haven't figured out the the QB rating stat, and never take it too seriously. Completion percentage tells me much more. He's completing a very nice percentage, which means he's becoming consistent. Just gotta turn this into 3rd down production. .
in the nfl
Completion Percentage
a = ((comp/att x 100) – 30) x .05
Average Yards Per Attempt
b = (yards/att – 3) x .25
Percentage of Touchdown Passes
c = (td/att) x 20
Percentage of Interceptions
d = 2.375 – (int/att x 25)
If the result in any category is less than 0, the given result should be 0. If the result in any category is greater than 2.375, the given result should be 2.375.
After you figure those out you can use the Passer Rating NFL formula
(a + b + c + d)/6 x 100
maximum possible quarterback rating for the NFL 158.3.
A perfect rating requires at least a 77.5% completion rate, at least 12.5 yards per attempt, a touchdown on at least 11.875% of attempts, and no interceptions.
it's not fair to judge a QB on just any one stat
Nice post!

He'll be out of the NFL soon with a record like that.

He can do it all season. He's been the same exact guy all season. Sing just didn't play him at the beginning of the year but probably should have. There are lots of things Sing should have done but he is very dumb.
Seriously, you think Coach Singletary is "very dumb" ? He has made mistakes, and I think thats because he is learning on the job. With that said, I have to disagree that he is very dumb. He had sense enough to start Alex when Hill struggled.
IMO very dumb is too negative and is no way near the right description for Coach Singletary .......
Alex is doing a great job, he will continue to grow and shine for the Niners, with Coach Sing!!!

What about Aaron Rodgers? The Pack went 6-10 last year. Why did they bring him back?

Come on, no one here seriously wants Hill to be the starting quarter back for this team, still... do they???
I mean, I'd have to really hate Alex Smith in order to want that ridiculous dead-duck-throwing guy to be my QB.
I really think Smith will be in the top half of the league in stats if given the entire year to start.
The REAL PROBLEM with this team is putting all the parts together and play one COMPLETE GAME...
that means no DROPS, no st00pid PENALTIES, no lame COACHING ERRORS, and no PLAY CALLING MISCUES.
That way, Smith and every other promising young player, can shine by just playing the game. That, and we need a good off season fixing our O-line and secondary!

Alex has done a great job, since he has replaced Hill. The QB rating is very encouraging, and certainly shows the improvement he has made.
For those who wish to ignore his improvement... Meh, that's their option, but the facts are obvious.
As for wins and losses being an argument between Hill and Smith, what a joke. Football is the ultimate team game. Anybody who has ever played football, at any level, understands this concept.
The variables for comparison between the games Shaun played, and the games Alex played, are countless. Why bother with such nonsense?
Shaun played hard for us, but he was clearly regressing. The coaching staff saw it, the fans saw it, and a change was made. It's Alex's time now. Give credit where it's due.

When JTO was putting up good numbers, you said you don't care what he does if he's not winning.

Of course not but the offense does not need to be changed this dramatically. There must be a middle ground or we will be inconsistent and lose to teams we should not lose to.

Our style of play with Hill lead the league with 3 and outs and you think if Hill stayed in that we would of made the playoffs??? Not.
If we would of stayed with Hill we would of lost just as much and you wouldn't have Smith to pin it on.
Serious question: You didn't see defenses catching up with Hill and starting to shut him down during the Falcons and Texans game?
